  4. QPS2 - Main Points • Upgrade of existing Quench Protection System. • Protection of newly installed sc. Elements (IT, sc. Links, 11T, IPDs, … ) • Ensure compatibility to increased radiation levels in tunnel. • Ensure high level of system dependability. • Possibly re-locate major part of protection electronics to low radiation areas or surface. • New communication links for data acquisition and supervision. • Advanced remote diagnostics and maintenance. 30 June 2014 D. Wollmann

  5. QPS2 - Plans • Protection parameters of new devices to be specified by equipment responsibles (WP3, WP6, WP18) in collaboration with MP3. • Draft specifications for QPS2 ( ~ end 2014). • Study, which parts of the QPS could be removed from the tunnel (~ end 2014). • R&D from 2015. 30 June 2014 D. Wollmann

  7. EE - Main Points • Upgrade of existing Energy Extraction Systems. • Protection of newly installed sc. Elements (IT, sc. Links, 11T, IPDs, … ) • Development of new generation of Extraction Switches: • Semiconductor switch • Noise-free operation (no arcs) • Very short release times (~200us) • Highly reliable operation. • Low maintenance requirements. • High on-state losses (water cooling required) • Hybrid switch (electro-mechanic switch parallel to semiconductor switch) • Noise-free operation (no arcs) • Release times ~20ms. • Highly reliable operation. • Low maintenance requirements. • Low on-state losses. • New design of extraction resistors: • Very fast recovery time (cooling). • Compact design. • Easily changeable resistance 30 June 2014 D. Wollmann

  8. EE - Plans • Protection parameters of new devices to be specified by equipment responsibles (WP3, WP6, WP18) in collaboration with MP3. • Prototype of 10kA switch expected in second half of 2015. • Prototype Extraction Resistor (10MJ, 1500V) expected in second half of 2015. 30 June 2014 D. Wollmann
