Color. What are the colors of the rainbow?. Where is WHITE?. It’s combination of all colors (all frequencies of light are reflected). If you add more and more colors of MARKERS, the darker and darker the color will get.

  2. What are the colors of the rainbow?

  3. Where is WHITE? • It’s combination of all colors (all frequencies of light are reflected)

  4. If you add more and more colors of MARKERS, the darker and darker the color will get. • But as you add more and more colors of LIGHT, thelighter the result will get!

  5. Then what is BLACK? • No reflection of color (all frequencies of light are absorbed)

  6. Color is due to the way objects reflect light. WHY? • The color of an object is not within the object, but in the light which shines upon it • Some wavelengths are absorbed and some are reflected • What is reflected to our eye is what color we see the object as…. • Reflects: G • Appears: G • Reflects: R • Appears: R

  7. How do we see color? • Our eyes respond to the visible light spectrum • We have psychological and physiological responses to light waves of a specific frequency and wavelength impinging upon the eye

  8. The Human Eye • Retina lined with rods and cones • Cones – color sensing (RGB) • Rods – light intensity sensing • For white light all three cones activated.

  9. INTERESTING FACT: • White light results from the combination of just red, green and blue light! Why? • Red, Green, Blue = PRIMARYcolors of light! • Magenta, Yellow, Cyan = SECONDARY colors of light! • Red + blue = magenta • Blue + green = cyan • Red + green = yellow • Through various combinations of these colors we can get all other colors of light!   10. Complementary Colors • Each secondary color can be added to the primary color that is was not composed of to create white light. The matching of colors are called complementary colors. • Red + cyan = white • Blue + yellow = white • Green + magenta = white

  12. Polarization of Light • Due to the unique transverse nature of a light wave, it can be thought of as a transverse wave vibrating in many directions at once if it is unpolarized. • A polaroid filter allows us to let only one direction of light through!

  13. What is all this useful for? • Sunglasses • 3D movies • Allows you to see light from only 1 projector with each eye which gives the perception of depth
