  2. 10 minutes to start • Groups of 2-3 • Half a piece of chart paper, markers • Draw a diagram that shows the most significant events, people, or developments in the history of the world • Use pictures, icons or words • Arrange them in a way that makes sense to you

Analyzing your sketch • Does your sketch show well-known people & events OR the lives of ordinary people? • Any references to nations or countries? • Any connections to local, national or international issues? • Do your choices feature big historical changes? • Did your choices change people’s lives?

  4. In your group - of these people, which is the most historically significant to Canada? • Sir John A MacDonald • Wayne Gretzky • Terry Fox • Celine Dion • Frederick Banting • Clara Hughes • David Suzuki What are the criteria your group used to decide?

  5. Agree or disagree: “If it is in the textbook it must be significant. Why else would they put it in there”

  6. It’s Historically significant if… • It resulted in change • It “reveals” something about the time

  7. What does this story of a student’s grandmother reveal about the time period? “She was the 4th of 9 children and was born at home on their farm north of Belleville. When I asked her about her childhood she recalled looking after her younger siblings a lot and helping her Mom with chores around the house like washing clothes and preparing food. When she was about 8 she was put in charge of the chickens and got to keep some of the money from the sale of the eggs. She would save it up and once a month walk all the way into town where she would go to the General store to look for something to buy that she could share with her 2 favorite sisters who were a few years younger than her. She said the store sold everything and was the only place in town that you could buy chocolate…”
