Current RTS Vision “To deliver a Modern Transport System for the north east of Scotland which enables a more economically competitive, sustainable and socially inclusive society” Main Roles • Advocate North East’s transport needs. • Prepare a regional transport strategy. • Secure commitment to strategy and key projects. • Ensure effective delivery of key projects. • Focus for regional consultation.

Ongoing Projects and Programmes to consider • New National Transport Strategy Coming Soon • Transport Bill going through Parliament • Scottish Government - Programme for Government – Phase out the need for new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2032 • City Region Deal • New Harbour • A96 Dualling • STAG • Amongst many others.

  7. Car OwnershipWith 239,000 cars, the north east has more cars and vans than households, yet around 20% of households do not have access to a vehicle.

The challenge: • A big change in the thinking about how we use the transport system - MaaS • A significantly improved public transport system • Better and safer walking and cycling opportunities • Modal Shift - Less reliance on the private car • Move to low emission vehicles from ICE • Driverless Vehicles

  10. The prize: • A much improved travelling experience • Improved air quality • Reduced congestion • More socially inclusive (around ¼ of people don’t have access to a car) • Multi-modal • Are we ready to accept a change in our behaviours?

  11. What Should Our Vision for 2040 be? RTS to: • support region’s economy, • make best use of limited resources, • improve health of population, • improve access to transport, • reduce impact on environment, and • ensure safety remains a priority?

  15. Car Clubs • Aberdeen currently has Co-wheels car club • Nestrans has funded some electric vehicles for the Co-Wheels car club in Aberdeen

  16. Hydrogen Project - Aberdeen • Demonstration project • Includes buses, cars and other vehicles - including bicycles • Two refuelling centres

  17. Driverless Vehicles • Not science fiction • Legislation has already been amended in regard to insurance etc • What do we need to do to be ready for these?

  18. MaaS – Mobility as a Service • Multi-operator and multi- modal tickets and packages • Order transport from your smart phone • Pay from smart phones • Demand responsive • Already happening in other parts of country

  19. Air Quality - Low Emission Zone • There are three Air Quality Management Areas in Aberdeen • Public Health Issue • Electric and Hydrogen fuel vehicles can help reduce emissions • Scottish Government want Low Emission Zones if all four major cities in Scotland

Overall • Need to strongly support alternative fuel vehicles to help reduce emissions • Need to increase in infrastructure – charging/refuelling • Promotion to the public BUT … as part of a wider multi-modal Regional Transport Strategy. • Replacing all conventional vehicles with alternative fuels won’t solve problems of congestion, parking, inactivity and social isolation etc • Still need to promote active travel and public transport • As well as maintaining the infrastructure we currently have
