  2. SAR Marine User’s Manual Published The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Marine User’s Manual was published in March 2005 by the Government Printing Office. This hard-cover, 464-page manual, edited by Christopher Jackson and John Apel, was developed under the sponsorship of the NOAA/NESDIS/Office of Research and Applications. The manual consists of twenty peer-reviewed chapters written by an international group of authors from Europe, Canada, and the U.S. There are four chapters on the principles of SAR measurements of sea ice, Arctic and Antarctic sea ice, icebergs, and operational sea ice applications.   3. CryoSat Meetings and Validation Status Dave McAdoo participated in the First International CryoSat Workshop on Mar 8-10 at ESA/ESRIN/ Frascati, Italy. As a member (coI with W. Krabill of NASA) of CryoSat Calibration, Validation, Retrieval Team (CVRT).McAdoo also participated in the CVRT splinter meeting on Mar 10. Inasmuch as the CryoSat launch has now slipped until July, 2005 and NASA P3 aircraft remains out of service planned FASIT-II Cal-Val flights necessarily postponed until last half of FY2005.   4. NIC Chief Scientist Appointment A Letter of Agreement describing the position of NIC Chief Scientist was signed by NESDIS/ORA and the National Ice Center (NIC). Pablo Clemente-Colón was officially introduced as the new Chief Scientist during the 2005 NIC Annual Meeting. A series of telecons, meetings, and briefings with NIC Polar Science Team outside collaborators and sponsorstook place in order to catch up with the substantial number of activities in which the NIC Science and Applied Technology Department is involved. These included research partners from NorthWest Research Associates (NWRA), Vexcel UK, George Mason University Center for Earth Observing and Space Research (GMU/CEOSR), University of Washington Applied Physics Laboratory Polar Science Center (UW/APL/PSC) the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF), Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), U.S. Coast Guard, Canadian Ice Service (CIS), and the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Program (NSF/OPP).
