  2. The Strange Situation Cultural Variations of Attachment Studies

  3. What is culture? Culture is a concept that is really hard to define. It’s made up of a number of different factors that uniquely combine to represent a group of people. Culture’s can be as large as a continent, or as small as a group of friends. Using the sheets I’ve given you, see if you can put together a definition of what culture is.

  4. Types of culture Globally, cultures can be divided into two very broad categories:

  5. z z Culture and the Strange Situation The Strange Situation is a product of American Culture - Ethnocentric The findings from the experiment may not be applicable to other cultures. Do we even think culture is homogenous across the USA?

  6. z Van Ijzendoorn and Kroonenberg (1988) • Meta-analysis of results of 32 Strange Situation Experiments across 8 different countries and 1,990 children. • Germany, Israel, Japan, China, USA, Sweden, Netherland, Great Britain • They were looking for variation of attachment typesBETWEEN countriesWITHIN countries

  7. You’ve got five minutes. On your tables, identify which of the following are collectivist, which are individualist: • Netherlands • Israel • China • USA • Great Britain • Germany • Japan • Sweden

  8. z Differences WITHIN Countries • Differences within countries were found to be 150% bigger than across countries. • For example, within the USA studies, the lowest rate of Type B was 46% in one study and 90% in another. • America is a HUGE multicultural society.

  9. Why are Type-C attachments more common in collectivist cultures? • Individualist cultures tend to raise children to be more independent and self-sufficient than collectivist. • In Japan for example, a mother is expected to be constantly present for a child all the way up until at least three years old. • As a result, children can become incredibly distressed from separation.

  10. Answer the questions on page 31-34 of your work pack. After that, answer questions on the worksheet. You can use your mask textbook, or the photocopy of GHG to help with both tasks.
