  2. Introduction • The Mapped Instrument is a tool that guides you in matching your site specific Instrument and materials to the generic STEPS tools.

Why map your Instrument • By aligning your site specific Instrument, you will be able to use: • Data entry tools • Data analysis and reporting tools: • Fact Sheet and Fact Sheet Analysis Guide • Data Book • Automated Epi Info analysis programmes • Provides documentation on: • Instrument used • Data entry values

  4. STEPS Mapped Instrument and Dataset Structure

Mapping your Instrument • Go to the first question in your site-specific Instrument. • Locate this question in the Mapped Instrument. • Continue to the next question in your site-specific Instrument and repeat steps 2 and 3 above. Continue until all questions from the site-specific Instrument have been mapped.

Mapping your Instrument, cont. • For new or altered questions you need to: • Record the new question at the bottom of the associated section of the Mapped Instrument. • Give the question a generic STEPS code.* * All additional questions are given the code of X plus a numeric value (X1, X2,X3…)

Transforming your Dataset • Identify records that do not match the generic STEPS responses. • Identify records in your dataset that do not match • the generic STEPS code/variable name and • the data types of the generic dataset • Change the structure of your dataset to match the STEPS dataset.

  9. Moving your dataset into the STEPS database • Instructions are available in Section 3 of the Mapping and Transforming your Materials document for moving your dataset into the following software: • EpiData • Epi Info version 6 and 3.3.2 • Microsoft Access • Microsoft Excel • SPSS

  10. Check your new STEPS database • After moving your dataset to the STEPS database you should have: • Microsoft Access database that is called STEPS.mdb • Within STEPS.mdb two tables • Programs • MasterDataSet (this needs to be the name of your country dataset)

  11. Matching your dataset- variable names • Select the 1st instance where the variable names do not match. • Open STEPS.mdb • Right click on MasterDataSet and select Design View. • Locate and change the name of the variable that needs to be changed in the Field Name column.

Matching your dataset- data types • Select the 1st instance where the data types do not match. • Open STEPS.mdb. • Right click on MasterDataSet and select Design View. • Locate the name of the variable that needs to be changed in the Field Name column. • Click on Data Type of the variable and select the appropriate data type .
