  1. Growing in the Right Direction A Special Message for the New Year Psalm 37:1-40 January 6, 2013 Pastor Paul K. Kim

  2. A TALE OF A WELL-MEANING FARMER • We would never make the same mistake . . . • BUT in our relationship with God, why is it that we tend to make the same mistakes over and over?

  3. NEW YEAR: AN OPPORTUNE TIME FOR GROWTH . . . BUT IN WHAT DIRECTION? • Not all growth is healthy: ingrown toenail, cancer, debt, body fat, etc. • Not-so-obvious “growth in the wrong direction”: worry/fret, moral-compromise/wrongdoing, stress/anger, greed/pride, etc. • By nature, Christian growth requires: changing the direction of our growth. • The new/right direction is not about: us [self] but about God—trusting God as we surrender ourselves.

  4. HOW DO YOU GROW IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION—TOWARD TRUSTING GOD? 1)   Begin with RELINQUISHING YOUR CONTROL of the universe—including your own life (vs. 1, 7, 8, 11). 1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! 7 Be still before the Lord... fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! 8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. 11 But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace. Psalm 37:1, 7, 8, 11

HOW DO YOU GROW IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION—TOWARD TRUSTING GOD? 3)   Be sure to WAIT FOR THE LORDnot for something/someone else—staying the course (vs. 9, 27, 34, 39, 40). 9 For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.27 Turn away from evil and do good; so shall you dwell forever. 34 Wait for the Lord and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on when the wicked are cut off. 39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; he is their stronghold in the time of trouble. 40 The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him. 16. Waiting for the LORD Means... Waiting for God is not laziness. Waiting for God is not going to sleep. Waiting for God is not the abandonment of effort. Waiting for God means, first, activity under command; second, readiness for any new command that may come; third, the ability to do nothing until the command is given. – G. Campbell Morgan

  18. THREE PRACTICAL QUESTIONS FOR OUR EVERYDAY LIFE • In what current circumstance(s) of my life do I need to relinquish my control to God? If so, what will I stop doing? • What specific things/areas do I need to lay down to the LORD? If so, what will I start doing? • What would it mean for me to wait for the LORD in the New Year 2013?
