  1. Steps in the Right Direction: Global Carbon Footprints Students calculating, comparing, and cutting their impact on the planet

Objective • After students have calculated their carbon footprint, they will interpret the data to compare and contrast their results with other students’ results from around the world. • Students will increase their awareness of how their energy use choices and behaviors impact the earth via CO2 emissions. • Students will make recommendations and take action to decrease their energy use in order to reduce their carbon footprint.

  4. Prior Activity • Students create a data table of their class average carbon footprint. • Students will create a graph of their carbon footprint. • Students will analyze the results of their class average carbon footprint.

  5. Intro Activity • Google Earth of the different schools around the world that are participating in the carbon footprint activity. • Teacher-led class discussion on • prior knowledge & misconceptions • predictions of carbon footprints around the world • review essential vocabulary

  6. During Activity • Students will electronically share their class average carbon footprint data tables and graphs with schools from other countries. • Student lead analysis and interpretation of energy use and carbon footprint patterns.

  7. After Activity • Students will draw conclusions based on carbon footprint results • Energy conservation methods • Global climate • Energy resources available • Economic and environmental issues
