  2. Hero checklist • 1. Courage: Did the person exert a willingness to meet danger without fear? • 2. Charisma: Did the person show exceptional ability to lead? • 3. Cunning: Did the person show an ability to lead? • 4. Perseverance: Did the person persevere in times of adversity?

  5. Gilgamesh, an epic hero • As we read the selection from the Epic of Gilgamesh, consider the heroic characteristics that Gilgamesh displays on his quest for eternal life.

They set the time of our death. • Why didn’t Gilgamesh follow Siduri’s advice? • He became angry and destroyed the boat.

  15. A summary of the epic(taken from www.historyguide.org) • “ The gods had created Enkidu—a wild creature—in the hope that he might challenge the arrogant and ruthless Gilgamesh and thus temper his excesses.

  16. summary, con’t • After an initial confrontation, Gilgamesh and Enkidu become friends. On an expedition to the west, they confront an evil monster, Humbaba, in the Cedar Forest.

  17. summary, con’t • …Enkidu slays Humbaba and , in retribution, the gods take Enkidu’s life. Enkidu’s death so haunts Gilgamesh that he undertakes to seek eternal life, and so Gilgamesh the mighty hero is transformed into Gilgamesh the broken mortal.

  18. summary, con’t • The pursuit of immortality leads Gilgamesh into further adventures. The most famous is his encounter with Utnapishtim, an ancient hero who had survived a tragic flood.

  19. summary, con’t • His tale, recounted in the epic, bears so many resemblances to the Biblical story of the Flood that Utnapishtim is often called the Babylonian Noah.

  20. summary, con’t • Gilgamesh, following Utnapishtim’s advice, finds a plant capable of rendering him immortal, only to have it stolen by a snake while he sleeps, exhausted from his quest. On this note, the epic ends.
