  1. SMSAMid-Year UpdateDecember 3, 2007

  2. 1 - 1:05p Introduction 1:05 - 1:40p Focus Group Presentations * Treasury * Admissions * Curriculum * Social 1:40 - 1:55p Q/A 1:55p Wrap-up Agenda

  3. The goals of this session are to address 4 major financial aims as determined by SMSA: Decreased funding over the last 4 years with uncertain future income Sources of group funding for those interest groups with a departmental affiliation Sources of conference funding for individuals not affiliated with an interest group Creation of a CFC Endowment

  4. Expected Income 2007-2008: $52,900 Expenses: Social: Class Funds--$2,500 (total) Social Funds--$3,000 Moonlighting--$13,000 Operations: Copier Upkeep--$320 SMSA-sponsored events--$1,500 SMSA Operations--$2,500 Student Activities: Research Travel Funds--$3,500 SPIF Funds--$1,000 Annual Funding--$25,000 SMSA Funding Breakdown 2007-2008

  5. Created ~7-10 years ago by the then current SMSA administration Purpose of the endowment is both to Support SMSA in future times of financial uncertainty or crisis Back large projects that are in keeping with the ethos of SMSA and the general Stanford Medical student body SMSA Endowment

  6. Problem 1: Decreased SMSA Funds Over Time and uncertain financial future ???

  7. Decreased SMSA Funding Over Time-- Proposed Solutions/Steps Taken: Met with Jim Rollins & Brenda Lavell to discuss the possibility of creating student activities fees and implementing TECU system. Meeting to follow in upcoming weeks. A written contract for the café/vending machines is currently in the works. Arbor and Pacific Free Clinics were taken out of the annual funding process this year to lessen the overall group funding budget. SMSA is implementing systems to help student groups find outside funding thereby lessening the overall group funding budget.

  8. Problem 2: Group Funding Many student groups continue to depend solely on SMSA funding despite the fact that they have departmental affiliations • Departmentally Affiliated Groups with Outside Funding • Radiology Interest Group--$2000 from the Radiology Department • Emergency Medicine Interest Group--$1000 from the Emergency Department • Pediatric Interest Group--$1500-$2000/year from the Pediatric Department • Departmentally Affiliated Groups WITHOUT Outside Funding • Healing HeARTs, Medical Students for Choice, OBGYN interest group, Ophthamology Interest Group, Student Interest Group in Neurology, Transplant Interest Group

  9. Group Funding-- Proposed Solutions/Steps Taken: Meeting has been proposed for next September to help student groups to find additional departmental funding. Currently considering matched funding incentives for groups able to find outside funding Getting the administration involved in this project by encouraging departments to support their sister student groups

  10. Problem 3: Options for Individual Funding • SMSA maintains a budget of $3500 for students to present research at conferences • This fund pays up to $200/student of the student’s travel expenses • Each year, this fund is maxed out due to the popularity of the program • Additionally, we do not currently have the capacity to fund students who would like to attend conferences at which they are not presenting research

  11. Individual Funding-- Proposed Solutions/Steps Taken: SMSA would like to work with the administration to increase the support offered to medical students to attend conferences--either to present research or to learn more about a particular area of interest

  12. Problem 4: Cardinal Free Clinics (CFC) requires future financial plans CFC require massive funding to continue their role as functioning free clinics and institutions of the Stanford educational experience

  13. CFC Endowment-- Proposed Solution/Steps Taken: SMSA unanimously voted to pledge $100,000 to the CFC endowment SMSA representatives shared the pledge commitment and stipulations at the last CFC board meeting Met with Jim Rollins to discuss endowment gift and its impact on SMSA funds Met with Zera Murphy, Josh Thiel and Carol Kersten to solidify language of the endowment

  17. SMSA saw a need for.. Applicants to be better informed about student interest groups. Interest groups to have organized access to interested applicants. Why?

  18. Admissions has a great system of online scheduling Our Idea… Extra page to online interview scheduling: Applicants select groups to receive information about Groups listed on this page: Each group provides updated/supplemental information When applicants select a group… Applicant receives this information (personalized) Groups are notified that the applicant is coming and interested Online Checkbox System

  20. Applicant Accepted for Interview Applicants Select Groups of Interest when scheduling Interview Groups will get Applicants’ emails and can choose to contact them Applicants Receive 1-page insert about Groups they selected Applicant may enjoy a nice dinner with the group of their choice

  21. [completed]Present to Admissions Talk to IT about adding page Contact emails from student groups willing to provide supplemental information Work with IT implement page as part of interview scheduling Action Items

  22. Overview • Interviewee Contact with Student Interest Groups 2. Interviewee Hosting Program • Student host perspective • Applicant perspective

  23. SMSA saw a need for… An organized hosting program that is advertised to and easily accessible for interviewees. Why?

  32. Interviewee Hosting Program Ideas: • Provide air mattresses/sleeping bags • Increase incentives • Advertise hosting program (both to interviewees and more to hosts) • Online signup/management system for host matching • - Add sign-up page to online interview scheduler

  33. Curriculum Working Group Tiffany Castillo Shaundra Eichstadt Sumit Shah

  34. Areas not being addressed by CCAP: International Health Women’s Health LGBT Health Community Health Areas being addressed by CCAP: Biochemistry Structure of POM Q6 HHD & other courses in the formal curriculum Areas in Need of Curriculum Development as Identified by Students

  35. Challenges Faced by Medical Students Interested in International Health • No centralized place at the SoM with IH resources/knowledge • No funding for service-learning immersion programs abroad • No International Health Application Area • No coherent IH curriculum at the SoM • Lack of communication to students & need for student involvement regarding the progress of IH initiatives at the SoM/greater University • We fail at recruiting strong applicants who are interested in IH

  36. Work with faculty to develop an International Health Application Create a multidisciplinary course that prepares students to engage in international health research and service-learning E.g. “The Science of Implementation: Global Health Delivery” Address resource management, advocacy, policy, CBPR methods Partner with GSB, Law School, Design School, Education, etc. Open to all graduate students and residents Develop suggested timeline for coursework and IH activities Yr 1 or 2: coursework (RIH, The Science of Implementation, ADEM lecture series) Summer after Yr 1 or 2: field experience abroad with learning objectives to establish foundation and background in area of interest Yr 2+: additional coursework in areas of interest, TS proposal Work with residency programs to identify opportunities for collaboration Proposal

  37. Establish a funding process to support medical students and residents who want to engage in IH service-learning, immersion or clerkship programs Develop a central IH resource for medical students that dovetails with the greater University IH Initiative (http://thestanfordchallenge.stanford.edu/get/layout/tsc/International) Create a central website at SoM Identify faculty advisor(s) for students interested in IH Proposal

  38. Create a SoM survey to: Assess student interest in and thoughts on IH Document past & current student IH activities Work with OCH and key IH faculty throughout University to develop a student IH curriculum proposal Meet with Dr. Baker about status of IH Application in Winter 2008 Present proposal to Deans in Winter 2008 Next steps
