This project aims to improve human performance in complex tasks by creating scenarios for civilian and military training. It tests an experimental tool for measuring reasoning level and advances theory related to intellectual maturation. It examines the link between sustained effort in complex reasoning and intellectual development.

Assessing and Enhancing Complex Reasoning Skill in National Security Domains • Overall quest: improve human performance in complex tasks or in working so-called ill-structured problems • Despite impressive undergraduate experience, measures at USAFA do not show progression in complex reasoning skill. Similar situation nationally in colleges and universities. • HSD effort creates a bank of scenarios (“model-eliciting activities” or MEAs) appropriate for civilian first responder and military officer training • Initial domains of geospatial information systems and terrorist network modeling • Tests and refines an experimental tool (Cogito) for measurement of reasoning level • Advances theory related to MEAs and to stage approach to intellectual maturation • Examines the empirical link between sustained effort in complex reasoning and intellectual development United States Air Force Academy
