3. Warm up Why are the Texans so mad at the Mexican Government?
4. Learning Target I can tracethe developments of the Texas Revolution and find the significance of each.
5. Research and Collaborate You and your partner are going to read about several events that led to Anglos wanting to rebel. Write a summary of the event on your chart On the signal compare your summaries and decide on a significance (don’t write it yet!) All together we will decide what the significance of the event is and include it on the chart.
6. Mexican Constitution 1824 Terms: Citizens must be Catholic Slaver is allowed Coahuila and Texas are 1 Mexican state 3 branches of government Local gov’t gets to make more laws for themselves
7. Significance Mexico is independent with a real constitution so it can be an organized country. Other countries around the world recognize it as independent from Spain.
8. Fredonia Rebellion 1st attempt by Anglos to free Texas from Mexican rule. Not successful Led by Haden Edwards
9. Significance Mexico becomes afraid they will loose Texas.

Decree (Law) of April 6, 1830 The terms of this law: Eliminated (stopped) more slaves from entering Tejas Stopped immigration from the U.S. (but not Mex. or Europe) Taxed US imports (brought into Tejas) What is one issue the Decree of 1830 did NOT change that the colonists might want changed? Freedom of religion – there was none…yet!
11. Significance How was this decree (law) an important link in the chain of events leading to the Texas Revolution? The Law of April 6, 1830 threatened the prosperity (wealth) of the colonies in Tejas.
12. Mier y Teran General Mier y Teran was sent to investigate Texas Found too many Anglos in Texas (10:1) Found Anglos were not practicing the Catholic religion Mexico needed more control over Texas
13. Significance This report led to the creation of the Decree of April 6, 1830 which made the Anglos afraid they would loose economic growth.
14. “Coahuila cannot govern Tejas; and the latter [ Tejas] cannot remain, and will not remain in harmony or calmness united with the former [Coahuila].”   Stephen F. Austin speaking to Vice President Gómez Farías in 1834 (about the Law of 1830) Attempting to fix the problems caused by the Law of April 6, 1830, SFA made this statement. As a result he was arrested and placed in a Mexican jail. Which constitutional principle in the USA could have prevented this from happening? FREEDOM OF SPEECH
15. Turtle Bayou Turtle Bayou Resolutions Texans wrote the Mexican gov’t a list of proposals : We are loyal to the Mexican gov’t We support Santa Anna (new president) We want to follow the Consti of 1824
16. Significance A group of colonists wrote down a promise of loyalty to the Mexican gov’t Is this enough? Why or Why not? Do you think the Mexican gov’t will believe the Anglo colonists? Why or why not?
17. Convention of 1832 The Turtle Bayou Resolutions had no effect and tensions increased. Texas colonists held an official convention in 1832 There they Pledged support of Mex. Const. of 1824 Asked to get rid of Law of April 6th, 1830 Allow immigration from the U.S. again Asked for Tejas to be an indep. state
18. Significance This is an official meeting by the leaders of the Anglo colonists to promise loyalty to the Mexican gov’t. Is this enough? Why or Why not? Do you think the Mexican gov’t will believe the Anglo colonists? Why or why not?
19. Convention of 1833 Growing impatient colonists held another convention. In this convention they made the same requests as in 1832 …. BUT this time they wrote a constitution for a new Mexican state of …………….. TEXAS!
20. Significance How do you think the Mexican gov’t felt about the colonists writing a constitution for a state which would be separate Texas from Coahuila? The Mexican gov’t s thought this act of creating a constitution as defiance toward the Mexican gov’t. This was TREASON!
21. Austin’s Arrest Austin takes the Convention’s proposals to SantaAnna but has to wait too long Austin writes a letter to the colonists encouraging them to declare a separate state from Coahuila. Santa Anna views this as treason and has SFA thrown in jail
22. Significance SFA is treated so unfairly that the colonists are ready for war now!

How do you know? Justify your answer. Do you agree or disagree with Austin’s quote? What is significant about Austin speaking these words instead of another colonist?
30. Battles Research Rotate through the centers to find out about each battle. Use the information on the readings, videos, and/or power points to help you understand each battle of the Texas Revolution.
