  3. history • known after the name of the great warrior of the region Maharaja Chhatrasa. • the District was previously under the then Vindhya Pradesh. • included in Madhya Pradesh on 1st November 1956.

  4. geographical situation • situated at North East border • area of 8687 Square Kms • is touched by Mohoba(Uttar Pradesh) in the East, Tikamgarh (M.P.) in West and Sagar (M.P.) in South East.

  5. demography As per the 1991 census, • total population – 11,58,076 • rural population – 9,34,552 (80.69%) • urban population – 2, 23, 524 (19.30%) • sheduled caste – 2,74,438(23.69%) • sceduled tribes – 43,482(8.63%) • males – 6,23,878 (53.87%) • females – 5,34,198 (46.12%) • total literates – 3,22,757 (27.87%) • (Males – 2,33,500 (20.16%) & females – 89,257 (7.70%)
