  4. Themost important fact in the life of James Hamilton 6th Earl of Abercorn

  5. He was a direct line descendant of Diana, Princess of Wales

  6. James II James Hamilton began his career at the age of 17 in the service of King James II. He held the office of Groom of the Bedchamber in 1678. King James was the last Catholic monarch to reign over England, Scotland, and Ireland. The current political and religious leaders at the time opposed him because he was too pro-French, too pro-Catholic and too much of an absolute monarch. William of Orange invaded with an army from the Netherlands and James II fled England, resulting in the Glorious Revolution of 1688.

  7. William III James Hamilton was a Protestant and deserted James II for the cause of William III. James II made one serious attempt to regain the crown when he landed in Ireland in 1689. It was during this attempt by King James II to regain his crown that James Hamilton proved his courage and allegiance to King William III. James Hamilton was involved in the Siege of Londonderry in 1689.

  8. The Siege of Londonderry 1689 In 1689 a regiment of Catholic troops advanced on Londonderry with the intention of slaughtering all the Protestants within. The town fathers, unaware of the intentions of King James II, were ready to admit the enemies in the city when a group of thirteen apprentice boys shut the gates of the city in the face of the invaders and shouted “No Surrender!” . This was the beginning of the siege of Londonderry which lasted from April 18 to July 28, 1689

  9. As the enemy forces approached, all the buildings outside the city walls were set on fire by the defenders to prevent them from being used as cover by King James II forces. King James rode to the gate and asked the city to surrender. He was rebuffed and the city fired on him. King James asked three more times and was refused. James Hamilton, who by now is Colonel James Hamilton, went to Scotland where he bought arms and 480 barrels of powder. His efforts in the siege of Londonderry did not go unnoticed by King William. The walls of Derry in 2009

  10. Breaking the boom King James set up a boom of logs and chains in the Foyle River. On the evening of July 28th, 1689 with the help of King William’s Royal Navy, three vessels broke through the boom and ended the siege of Londonderry. Army in formation The city had endured 105 days of siege during which some 8,000 people died, mostly of starvation and disease.

  11. In the summer of 1690 at the Battle of Boyne in eastern Ireland, King James suffered a final defeat against the forces of King William. King James II lived out the rest of his life as a pretender at a court sponsored by his cousin and ally, King Louis XIV.

  12. James Hamilton served in the Irish House of Commons from1692 to 1699, representing Tyrone. The membership of the House of Commons was directly elected, but on a highly restrictive franchise.

  13. Upon the death of his second cousin Charles in 1701, James Hamilton succeeded as Earl of Abercorn and Baron Hamilton of Strabane. He was recommended to King William in a letter from Colonel Fitz-patrick in which he said, “[James Hamilton] is a very rational and well affected gentleman, and as such I recommend him to you. If there be any occasion to employ such men, you will find him an honest sober man.” He was rewarded with the titles of Viscount of Strabane and Baron Mountcastle by King William on December 2, 1701.

  14. This Patent was created in Dublin, Ireland On December 2, 1701
