Analyzing Data Trends: Insights Through Exploratory Analysis and Modeling

This term project explores a specific research question through data analysis and visualization. We examine the source and facts about the dataset, identify issues such as missing values and outliers, and conduct exploratory analysis to draw initial conclusions. Various models are applied with clear metrics for evaluation, allowing us to compare their effectiveness. The project emphasizes the importance of visual storytelling, accurate captions, and consistent narrative flow, culminating in lessons learned about the question at hand.

  1. Term Project • Introduction • What is the question you are asking? • How will you know if you answer it? • Why should I care? • Data • Where did it come from? • Data Facts • Exploratory Analysis • Data issues, missing, outliers, interesting facts, • First impressions (X vs. Y) • Visualization

  2. Term Project • Models • What model(s) are you using and why? • What is the metric for evaluation? • Results • What is the output of the models • How do they compare with each other? • Conclusion • What did I learn about my question of interest?

  3. Term Project • Do Not! • Hand in code • Spend a lot of time tedious data collection and data cleaning tasks (even if they took you a long time!) • Hand in every plot you made • Notes • OK to include appendix (but not for code) • Choose pictures carefully! Every picture needs to be part of the story • Captions, axes • Failure is ok to report, but don’t dwell on it! • Grammar, spelling count! • Paper should be readable and have a narrative flow.
