  1. Roman Theatre Roman theatre had more variety than the Greek Theatre. Why? - included : 1. acrobatics 2. athletic events 3. gladiatorial combats

  2. The Romans, like the Greeks, associated their theatre with festivals, however: • Plays were only a small part of their festivals. • They liked comedy and presented many farces with stock characters played by actors wearing masks

  3. Physical set up • Because of the variety of entertainments (chariot races and combats) several different kinds of buildings were built. • These were temporary structures built for each festival. • They were outdoor amphitheaters built on level ground, not the sides of hills like the Greeks.

  4. Physical set up cont. • They were superior engineers so their buildings were expertly built and became massive (3 story) structures. • rather than a circle, the orchestra was a semi-circle. • The sceana ( skene – Greek) was the rectangular building behind the playing area. This was the massive 2- 3 story building used for storage and dressing rooms.

  5. Physical set up cont. • The seating was attached to the scaena. There were walkways around the seating much like our modern sporting arenas • Orchestra could be flooded for sea battles. This was based on their invention of aqua ducts around their cities.

  7. Acting The Romans: • Did not value versatility • Actors they admired specialized in the same characters. These were called stock characters. • Noted for great comic plays and farces. • Great comic playwrights were used to teach Latin during the Renaissance and would influence the likes of Shakespeare and future playwrights.

  8. Tragedy The most important tragic playwright to come out of Roman Empire: Seneca (5 BC – 65 AD) • Specialized in: - violent spectacle - portrayed stabbings, murders, and suicides - ghosts

  9. Food for thought Can you name some of Shakespeare’s plays that Seneca influenced? As a boy in school, Shakespeare would study myths and Greek and Roman Playwrights.
