  1. Abstracts • Each week you will be asked to abstract an article from one of the scholarly journals in our field. • Reports will be in two forms: • (1) a typical one-page typed abstract (maximum) duplicated with copies for each class membe • (2) an oral report or article critique

  2. Abstract Abstracts should be no more than one page in length. Abstract should be single-spaced and typewritten

  3. What happens with Abstract Copies should be available for the instructor and all class members.

  4. What happens with Abstract Oral reports should be no more than five minutes including time for discussion/ questions ... reports are more than a verbal reading of what has been written, e.g., more details and explanation to show attempted understanding of the research approach and method.

  5. What happens with Abstract Questions may be asked by the instructor and/class members.

  6. Abstract Reports • ALL REPORTS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS: • 1) Your Name and Date the Abstract is Turned In/Due ... • 2) BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CITATION for article read/reviewed .... author, title, journal from which the article was taken, volume, number, page, year, etc. (in APA style) ...

  7. Abstract Reports • -- ALL REPORTS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS: • 3) RESEARCH QUESTIONS asked by the study ... what is the researcher trying to determine? Are questions formally or informally stated? Null-type or research-type? Are they one-tailed or two-tailed? If none, just say so ... n/a • 4) HYPOTHESIS ... where appropriate, are these formally or informally stated? If none, just say so. If stated/included? Null, research, one vs two-tailed?

  8. Abstract Reports • -- ALL REPORTS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS: • 5) THEORETICAL APPROACH ... does the author rely on any theory or theoretical framework to direct the research? Are any specific theories mentioned or tested? • Would another theory have been better suited for the study?

  9. Abstract Reports • -- ALL REPORTS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS:  • 6) METHODS Used ... what methods are used to investigate the problem? What statistics are used in data gathering or data analysis (survey, mail or phone interviews, content analysis, regression, chi-squre, t-test, correlations)? You don't necessarily have to know what these terms are but mention them. Does the study require definitions? Any limitations and/or assumptions?

  10. Abstract Reports • -- ALL REPORTS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS: • 7) FINDINGS ... so what was found? Don't make this section too long or detailed ... briefly explain or describe how research questions were answered and one or two major findings related to research questions. • 8) CONCLUSIONS ... what can we now conclude? Was the author able to say something new? What was it? Was the author confident of the findings (significant or not)?

  11. Abstract Reports • -- ALL REPORTS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS: • 9) COMMENTS/CRITICISM ... Is it good or bad and WHY? What questions were not answered/addressed that should have been? Was the most appropriate method used to answer the questions asked? Did the author try to do too little or too much? Can you buy what was done, why it was done, and how it was done? • 10) IDEAS FOR FUTURE STUDY ... so how might we apply these procedures to another group or in another place or situation? Could this method be used again? WHERE DO YOU SUGGEST WE GO FROM HERE?
