  2. Just wondering… • Is your church, or house of worship, a safe place for a victim of abuse to disclose her suffering? • Is your community agency a safe place for a person to disclose that he or she is religious?

SOURCES OF DATA Quantitative Data Qualitative Data • CLERGY STUDIES • 5 denominations • N=750 • 6 page Survey • CLERGY STUDIES • 5 denominations • N=150 • 90 minute interviews COMMUNITY CONSULTATIONS SHELTER STAFF YOUTH GROUPS • FOCUS GROUPS • 24 congregations • N=247 women • Interviews (n=94)

We have learned… • There are several obstacles to sacred and secular workers partnering to assist abused women; • The majority of pastors are called upon several times a year to respond to a victim or an abuser; • Religious women are often disappointed to find that there is limited awareness and understanding of abuse by their leaders;

  6. Clergy are often reluctant to refer those who come to them for help; • Where referrals are needed most (from pastors with little training), they are most unlikely to occur; • When religious leaders preach a message condemning DV, discuss abuse in premarital counselling, and hold abusers accountable the impact is profound.
