  4. Succession The right, act, or process, by which one person succeeds to the office, rank, estate, or the like, of another. Replacement of one leader by another A succession plan is defined as providing guidance on what to do during a planned or unplanned departure of the current leader.

  5. When do you start? Immediately- Groom the next person All year- all positions need succession planning Multiple year succession planning

  6. What do you do? Listen, network, keep your eyes open Mentor tomorrow’s leaders Chair-Elect Focus on recruitment and retention Widen the circle Share knowledge Be transparent Ensure success-not sabotage

  8. Failure to Pass the Torch The torch goes out early. Information is intentionally withheld. Failure to meet with incoming chair for personal hand-over Critical files and documents are lost. Documents are “packed out” by mistake.
