  11. phenol • Phenol is the simplest phenol • One hydrogen on the benzene ring has been replaced by an –OH group • Solid at RTP • Slightly soluble in water due to the –OH group forming hydrogen bonds with the water (less soluble than alcohols though)

  13. Reactions of phenol to form salts • Phenol forms a weak acidic solution • It loses H+ ions from the alcohol group only • C6H5OH + aq C6H5O- + H+ • What do we use to neutralise acids? • What are the products of neutralisation?

  14. Phenol is neutralised by aqueous sodium hydroxide to form the salt sodium phenoxide (C6H5O-Na+) and water. • Sodium phenoxide is an ionic salt – don’t draw a bond between the O and the Na as that would imply that it is covalent
