Chapter 16: Sound. Section 1: Sound is a wave. Sound is a type of mechanical wave. sound waves are longitudinal waves. sound waves are caused by vibrations. vibrations are rapid back & forth motions. How sound waves are produced. Muscles push air from our lungs between our vocal cords.

  1. Chapter 16: Sound Section 1: Sound is a wave.

  2. Sound is a type of mechanical wave. • sound waves are longitudinal waves • sound waves are caused by vibrations • vibrations are rapid back & forth motions

  3. How sound waves are produced • Muscles push air from our lungs between our vocal cords • When are vocal cords vibrate, sound waves are produced

  4. How sound waves are detected (heard) • Our outer ear (pina) collects sound waves • Sound waves go through our ear canal • Sound waves cause our eardrum to vibrate (like a drum) • Middle ear: sound waves make the 3 smallest bones in our bodies (hammer, anvil, & stirrup)vibrate • Vibrations from the bones in the middle ear are passed along to the inner ear (cochlea) where tiny hairs vibrate and send electrical impulses to our brains!

  5. Sound waves vibrate particles. • Sound waves travel as compressions (areas of high pressure) and rarefactions (areas of low pressure). • Sound waves can’t travel in a vacuum (an area of empty space without air) because there aren’t any particles to pass along the wave’s energy.

  6. The speed of sound depends on its medium. • Sound travels more slowly than light; that’s why you see lightning and then hear the thunder. • Sound travels fastest through solids, then liquids, and then gases. • Sound travels faster in a hot medium then in the same medium when it is cold (particles move faster in hot materials).
