The Occupational Safety and Health Act was drafted in 1968, signed by President Nixon in 1970, and went into effect in 1971 • It was amended in 1969 prior to being signed by President Nixon in 1970 • It is a National Act, meaning it applies to the United States only, that • was created by • the US • Department of • Labor

The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) was enacted "to assure so far as possible every working man • and woman in the Nation safe and healthful • working conditions and to preserve our • human resources” • OSHA has the authority to create and • enforce standards for health and safety in • a workplace • OSHA also creates the Occupational Safety and • Health Review Commission to review the standards set by OSHA • OSHA was meant to keep the working environment free from toxic chemicals, unsanitary conditions, and mechanical dangers; which in turn reduced the hazardous emissions that factories and businesses would otherwise release
