  2. Warren G Harding • Born in1865 • Came from a small town where they did not expect the government to solve their problems. • Believed in taking care of one another and working hard. 1920-1923

  3. Attitude • Not remembered for his work ethic • Notorious for his love of leisure • Elected as a Senator of Ohio and skipped more sessions than attended • Missed the historic debates on both Prohibition (18th) and Women’s Suffrage. (19th)

  4. Election of 1920 • To recover from World War I, the nation needs: “healing, restoration, and a return to normalcy” Harding Won more than 60% of the vote!

  5. Harding’s Policies • “Less government in business and more business in government!” • Reduction of taxes for the wealthiest • Fordney-McCumber Tariff • Tax on imported farm goods to help US Farmers • Tendency to avoid major issues • Made him VERY popular

  6. Teapot Dome • Harding appointed highly skilled people to his cabinet in order to make up for his lack of skills • Appointed Secretary of Interior Albert Fall who took bribes in return for allowing oil companies to drill on federal land called Teapot Dome. “Don’t be the Fall Guy”

  7. From Scandal to Death… • Harding suffered a heart attack on vacation to the west coast • In bed he confessed “I am worn out…can’t stand the responsibilities and physical work, too” • He died August 2nd1923 • Vice President: Calvin Coolidge took the oath

  9. Calvin Coolidge • Had a reputation for being honest • Very straight laced • Eliminated corrupt officials • Unshakeable faith in business and industry Silent Cal 1923-1928

  10. Coolidge’s Policies • Active inactivity • Strong belief in limited government • Business would: • provide energy and resources to fuel America’s growth • promote arts and sciences • fund charities to help society • Lowered taxes and reduced government spending

  11. Lingering Affects of WWI • Major naval powers of the world agreed to cut back on the size of their navies. • US lent money to Germany so they could afford to pay reparations to GB and France • Kellogg Briand Pact: • 60 nations signed an agreement not to wage war on one another
