  1. Digestive System 7-3.2 Recall the major organs of the human body and their functions within their particular body systems. 7-3.3 Summarize the relationship of the major body systems.

  2. Function of the Digestive System • Break down food into nutrients that can be used by the body • Absorb nutrients necessary for: • Energy • Growth • Maintenance • Rid the body of solid wastes

  3. Primary Organs (digest food directly) • Mouth • Esophagus • Stomach • Small Intestines • Large Intestines • Rectum and Anus

  4. Secondary Organs (indirectly help digest-does not actually touch food) • Liver • Gallbladder • Pancreas

  5. Assessment of Prior Knowledge Mechanical vs. Chemical What things can you think of that are mechanical, or chemical? • Mechanical • working parts • Machines, gears • Grinding, crushing, turning • Change in size and shape • Physical change • Chemical • Interactions of substances • Changes in temperature, color, energy • Release of gas: bubbles • Formation of precipitate at bottom or top of mixture • Change of form: rust or burnt

  6. Mechanical Digestion Chewing, Chomping, Churning Breaking Up the Pieces Now We're Fed Chemical Digestion Saliva, Stomach Acid The Liver Makes the Bile That Breaks Up Fats

  7. Mouth • Function: • Begins to break down food into smaller pieces through MECHANICAL DIGESTION • Saliva: • Starts CHEMICAL DIGESTION

  8. Esophagus • Structure: • Tube that connects the mouth and stomach • Function: • Transports chewed food to the stomach

  9. Stomach • Function: • Continues MECHANICAL DIGESTION process by squeezing and churning • Continues CHEMICAL DIGESTION by secreting gastric juices that break down nutrients

  10. Small Intestines • Function: • *Where most of chemical digestion takes place • Location where nutrients from broken down food are absorbed

  11. Large Intestines • Function: • Location where *water is absorbed from food and taken into bloodstream • Prepares remaining food for elimination from the body

  12. Rectum and Anus • Structure: • Short tube at the end of the large intestine • Function: • Stores solid waste until it is eliminated from the body through the anus

  13. Secondary Digestive System Organs • Liver • Gallbladder • Pancreas • Indirectly helps digest food • Does not actually touch food/nutrients • Helps break down nutrients chemically

  14. Liver • Secondary Digestive Organ • Function: • Produces bile • Which breaks up fat particles

  15. Gallbladder • Secondary Digestive Organ • Function: • Stores bile produced by liver

  16. Pancreas • Secondary Digestive Organ • Function: • Produces digestive juices (and insulin) that help to further break down food in the small intestine

  17. Cooperation • Digestive System works with the: • Circulatory System • Nutrients broken down by the digestive system are transported to cells • Like glucose (________________)
