  4. Controlling Damaging Light • Turn off lights when room not in use • Close blinds • Cover exhibit cases to block sunlight until exhibit area is open • Don’t work in direct sunlight • No flash on cameras

  5. Temperature and Humidity • Keep HVAC functioning and maintained • Improve circulation with fans • Cut drafts • Don’t continuously change thermostats • Use low cost monitors • Wear appropriate clothing

  6. Pest Management • Employ good housekeeping • Initiate a collection area cleaning project • Ban food and drink from collection work/storage areas • Sticky traps • Close book drops when library is open • Provide wet umbrella bags

  7. Handling and Shelving • When are White Gloves in style and when are they not? • Wash your hands and if patron is handling fragile items for which gloves should not be worn ask them to wash their hands before proceeding • Shelve oversized items separately if needed to keep them from being placed on spines or fore-edges • Put loose leaf or thin newsletters/publications in pamphlet binders so they do not curl • Keep items snug on shelves • Teach student workers to identify shelving problems

  8. Emergencies • Keep a phone tree and emergency contact information • Practice building escapes such as fire drills with staff and patrons • Have a non-work e-mail where you can be contacted as cell phones might not work during an emergency • Practice the proper use of fire extinguishers

  9. IMLS Connecting to Collections • In 2011 an Institute of Museum and Library Services Connecting to Collections Statewide Preservation Survey was undertaken in Louisiana.   10. Funding for Preservation • Improve pubic/private support for collection stewardship • Seek to assign modest budget for preservation • Attend free webinars • Self education • Join LYRASIS for a Free Webinar "NEH Preservation Assistance Grants." • March 13, 2013 12-1 PM ET

  11. Our biggest preservation problems will continue to be: • Lack of storage space and shelving • High humidity/mold • Lack of budget/funding for preservation • Lack of environmental control • Lack of staff to complete preservation projects

  12. Libraries need help with: • Preservation program planning • Consulting – circuit riding archivist/preservationist • Funding • Training • Inventorying of collections
