  1. (Agenda) • Mini-Lesson: Figurative Language (10 min) • Individual Practice: Silent Reading (20 min) • Whole-Class Share (10 min)

  2. Thursday, January 24, 2013 Please retrieve your folder and your journal. Check and make sure you filled out your reading log from yesterday. On the next blank page in your journal, please write down everything you know about the following words: 1) IDIOM, 2)ONOMATOPOEIA, 3) ALLITERATION, 4) SIMILE, 5) METAPHOR, 6)HYPERBOLE, 7) PERSONIFICATION.

  3. Notes • Write each of the words we reviewed today in your journal, with three spaces in between • Idiom, Onomatopoeia, Alliteration, Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Personification • As I go over each word, write down the definition NEXT to the word and ONE example underneath (leaving you with two blank lines)

  4. Figurative Language • Idiom: A saying that doesn’t mean what it really says • Do you have a chip on your shoulder? • Was this a piece of cake? • Am I all bark and no bite? • Onomatopoeia: Sound words • KABOOM! CRASH! CLICK! • Alliteration: 2+ words that start with the same consonant sound • Becky’s beagle barked and bayed, becoming bothersome for Billy. • Carrie’s cat clawed her couch, creating chaos.

  5. Silent Reading • Try to find at least THREE examples, any combinationin your reading. • 2 alliteration & 1 idiom • 3 similes • 1 hyperbole, 1 onomatopoeia, 1 metaphor • Etc

  6. Whole-Class Share PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO FILL IN YOUR READING LOGS!
