  1. By: Abigail Petrassi and Alexander Cuniglio Simile-Like Looking in a Dictionary

  2. How they are used • Similes are used often to present opinions. • If someone wanted to say that their stomach hurt they would say “My stomach rumbled like an earthquake.” • Their stomach did not do that but that is the point of a simile. To express an emotion or a feeling using a bigger, more powerful, and less similar word.

  3. When they are used • Characters enjoy showing emotion. So often similes appear in dialogue between two characters. • Sometimes when a book wants to describe a person in a powerful way they will use a simile like “Billy’s voice roars like a dinosaur.” • This statement tells the reader that Billy is very loud.

  4. How they are formed • A simile usually starts with a pronoun or noun such as a name or a thing. • After that it shows a characteristic of that person or what they are doing so this can be a noun or verb. • Depending on if the previous step is a noun or a verb you might have to place a verb now if the first two words are nouns.

  5. How they are formed (continued) • Then the word like is placed in or as. • Usually this noun is something that is completely different from the person it may even be an object. • This is how you make a simile. • There are always different variations or different situations in which people use similes but this is the basic format.

  6. Why they are used • Most of the time they are used to show power in words. • You say these to prove to people just how much you mean what you say although it is not true. • It may be used for sarcasm or even just for fun. • Similes are popular in Literature today and even in people’s everyday lives.
