  1. DALKEITH HIGH SCHOOL Curriculum for Excellence Course Choice Options MORE CHANCE OF MORE HIGHERS

  2. WHY CHANGE NOW? • Curriculum changes – not radical but definitely enhancing our youngsters’ futures • Curriculum for Excellence states that we should be providing a “Broad General Education” from S1 through to S3 followed by “Senior Phase” from S4 to S6 • Provide transferable skills for the world of work • S1 through to S3 needs to allow some personalisation and choice but with effective coverage of Expectations and Outcomes at levels 2, 3, 4 and possibly even 5 • Current Model with Course Choice in S2 and S4/5 does not sit well with principles of Curriculum for Excellence

  3. IN ADDITION . . . . • Present pattern only allows breadth up to end of S2 – with no personalisation & choice built in • Course Choice at the end of S3 would mean that pupils could only do 5 National Qualifications in S4 • Need to build in Personal Support - through PSE – part of which will be an ongoing completion of their S3 Profile • We can accommodate Curriculum for Excellence Principles through proposed model which allows 7 NQs by the end of S4 - as well as a better base on which to build future qualifications

  4. FURTHER CONSIDERATIONS • Need to consider how Universities will deal with qualifications – Highers over 2 years may not be advised • Edinburgh University - 15,000 applications for 2,000 places • Courses have to run over S3 and S4 to allow 160 hrs if more than 5 to be possible • Crash courses in S5/6 often do not give pupils best chance of success - this model allows more chance of success • Provides opportunity to do 3 Sciences or more imaginative/enhanced courses.

  5. FURTHER CONSIDERATIONS • High Schools across Scotland are planning a range of changes to address Curriculum for Excellence – Dalkeith High has to choose an approach which suits our pupils • Other High Schools in Midlothian are keeping the “2/2/2” model – but are moving to do 7 NQs by the end of S4.

  6. IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS • Youngsters with more employability skills and improved life chances • Improved attainment (more depth, more Highers) • Better coursing with more appropriate alternatives

  7. Present model follows 2/2/2 pattern • Breadth only up to end of S2 • Courses have to run over S3/S4 to allow 160 hrs • No early opportunity for personalisation and choice • Does not address “Broad General” and “Senior Phase” model recommended in Curriculum for Excellence • More need for “crash” courses in S5 and S6 – in subjects not studied since S2

  8. Closer to addressing principles of CfE – “Broad General” and “Senior Phase” • Allows some depth in S3 while keeping breadth • Choice spread across all curricular areas • Allows personalisation and choice • Time allocation allows 160 hrs from Xmas of S3 • Breadth in S3 allows better/more informed choices in S5 and S6 • NB applies to 2012/13

  9. Further addresses principles of CfE – “Broad General” and “Senior Phase” • Allows “settling in” in S1 – with full breadth of courses experienced • Pupils working towards NQs through coverage of Es & Os – but with some personalisation and choice and allowing some depth from S2 • Time allocation allows 160 hrs from Xmas of S3 • Breadth in S3 allows better choices/more chance of success in S5 and S6 • NB applies to 2013/14

  10. MODEL FOR REDUCING TO 11 COURSES IN S3 • English & Literacy [4x50min]; Maths & Numeracy [4x50min]; French [2x50min] – all pupils • 1 choice from each of 5 broad curricular areas [2x50min each] • Plus 3 further choices from any of broad curricular areas [2x50min each] • Almost all courses offered at various CfE levels – National 3, 4 and 5

  11. BROAD CURRICULAR AREAS • Science [Physics/Biology/Chemistry] • Health & Wellbeing/Social Subjects [PE/Dance/Fashion &Textile Technology /Practical Cake Baking & Finishing + Hospitality + RMPS] • Expressive [Art & Design/Music/Drama + Spanish] • Social Subjects [History/Geography/Modern Studies Business/Business Management + Accounts] • Technologies/Social Subjects [Design & Technology/Design & Manufacture/Graphic Communication /Engineering Science/Practical Electronics/Computing Studies & Information Systems + Administration & IT]

  12. SOME FURTHER OBSERVATIONS • Broad General Education can be continued through coverage of level 4/5 Es and Os up to Xmas in S3 – NQ courses are being developed by SQA around these; Units covered during S3 can be “banked” and used as “fall back” if necessary • NQ courses will start after Xmas in S3 and continue through S4; all pupils will therefore have studied 11 courses to a higher level than at present by the end of S3 • Teaching staff will be in a better position at Course Choice in S3 to give recommendations for S4 – and beyond

  13. SKILLS FOR WORK • Skills for Work Options would be available to pupils from S4 – intended to encourage wider achievement – and allow vocational options • Examples of possible options would include Languages for Life and Work; Construction and Engineering; Travel and Tourism; Rural Skills; Personal Development; Personal Finance; Sport and Recreation; Early Education and Childcare; Hairdressing; Creative Digital Media; Retailing; Steps to Work; Employability

  14. S2 into S3 COURSE CHOICE ARRANGEMENTS • S2 Course Choice in Feb [no change] • June start to timetable [no change] • Course Choice sheet to be kept in broad curricular areas – to encourage coherent choice which keeps options open • All pupils follow courses in English, Maths and French through to the end of S3 • “Trial Run” has just taken place with present S2 NB applies to session 2012/2013 only

  15. S3 into S4 COURSE CHOICE ARRANGEMENTS • S3 Course Choice in Mar [additional procedure] • June start to timetable [no change] • Course Choice sheet to allow continuation of 7 [from 11] courses – leading to NQs at end of S4 • Skills for Work Courses – added option for S4 NB applies to session 2013/2014

  16. CONSULTATION • Review of Curriculum Architecture by SMT [Oct/Nov] • Presentation of Model to PTs [Nov] followed by full staff consultation • Consultation with Senior Prefects [Nov] • Proposals submitted to Authority and other Midlothian High Schools [Dec/Jan] • Brief discussion at Parent Council Meeting [Dec] • Presentation to Parent Council [Jan] • Opportunity for Parental Feedback over 2 weeks • SMT networking with schools across Scotland [Nov-Jan] • HT presentation to all staff [Feb] • SMT presentation – S2 Coursing Information Evening [Feb]
