  2. The origin of the Project! • The RISI Programme • The Blekinge concept of regional IT-houses, BIT Houses • The Baltic Sea Region - prospective cooperation

  3. PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT To create a network of over 100 BIT-houses around the Baltic Sea through the establishment of some 10 BIT-houses in each one of the 11 regions around the Baltic.

  4. THE CONCEPT! • Internet Access Points • Learning laboratories -creates new possibilities for citizens andenterprises to take an active part in shaping ………the emerging sustainable Information Society.

  5. AIMS • Joining regions in the Baltic Sea area, strengthening the Baltic Dimension through increased: • Cohesion • Public Access to ICT • Awareness • Technological Infrastructure

  6. WHAT IS A BIT-HOUSE? A BIT-house is a local meeting place which - due to local needs or demands- in a dynamic way could offer:

  7. EXAMPLES • Distance workplaces and study possibilities • Support places for local industries and entrepreneurs • Access to Internet and E-mail • Public Services

  8. WHERE IS A BIT-HOUSE? • Depending on local needs and possibilities, a BIT-house can be hosted by: • A library • A Business Support Centre • A Citizens Office • An Internet Café • The local shop or pub • -or be situated ”on its own”

  14. Regional cooperation This project is carried by outstanding cooperation between 12 regions in The Baltic Sea Region. The cooperation is a major experience in open and effective work by partners from regions with different culture and tradition. As a result of the project work, the network of partners is in continued use for other additional matters.

  16. Spin Off from the project! The work with the project has created new activities, even before project activities has started! As example - BIT Houses in 3 municipalities in South Jutland, Denmark

  17. The Region South Jutland Area: 3,938 km2 (9.2% of the total area of Denmark) Population: 253.836 (4.8% of total Danish population) BIT Houses in 3 municipalities
