It’s not that complicated! Acts 2:22-24
Acts 2:22-24 • Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
There’s a little fear in all of us. • The disciples: “After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Matthew 26:73-74 • A piano virtuoso had a fear of performing in public. He was always afraid that people would think he wasn’t good enough. His name: Frederic Chopin.
Christians needn’t be afraid to share the gospel. • The apostles changed: “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13 • But what about us? • “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7
But we don’t know what to say. • Have we made it too complicated? • Theologians write sentences such as, “While in later antiquity the various forms of metaphys-ical and religious dualism are tied up with the ascetic ideal—the negation of matter—the rebirth of antiquity in the modern period replaced asceticism by active shaping of the material realm. Paul Tillich • Can you share that with your neighbor?
The Gospel is not complicated! • He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Romans 4:25 • …the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Matthew 20:28 • …God our Savior… wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. 1 Timothy 2:3-6
Who does not understand the gospel? • Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Other-wise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first impor-tance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. 1 Corinthians 15:1-5
Nowadays you may have to back up a step (or two) • We just read that Christ died for our sins. Many people today do not know what sin is or have no awareness of their own sinfulness. • Ask them about things they hate that people do them. • Ask them if they have ever said, thought or done anything like that themselves. • Tell them about the holiness and righteousness of God.
Then explain this idea to them. • This righteousness (from God)is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. Romans 3:22-25a
If people ask how to respond to that.. • In Acts 2:22-24, Peter reminded people they nailed Jesus to the cross and how he was raised from the dead because he was sinless. • Those who were listening asked appropriately, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Acts 2:37b • Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38
So what was the hard part? • We are all sinners, everyone of us. • Jesus didn’t sin and he offered himself up as a ransom for those who will accept it in faith. • We respond by repenting of our sins and being baptized. • God blesses us with the guidance of his Spirit after that. • Here’s the basic gospel. A fifth grader can remember that. It’s not complicated. • Can you share it?
