  13. Explanation of Certification Criteria

  14. Please refer to your copy of “Overview of OEM Green Partner Environmental Quality Certification.”

  15. OEM Green Partner Environmental Quality Certification OEM Green Partner Environmental Quality Certification is a scheme for making efficient procedures to ensure that the controlled substances are not contained in any of the parts or raw materials making up our products by certifying a system of managing the contorolled substances, which are defined by us, in the OEM suppliers.

  16. Certification Processes The scheme follows the processes as detailed below to certify the management system of the OEM supplier. Reviewing and starting the operation of the environmental quality assurance management system Applying to Sony for certification Auditing by Sony Concluding the OEM green partner agreement Issuing an OEM Green Partner Certificate to complete the certification procedures

  17. 1)Reviewing and starting the operation of the OEM environmental quality assurance management system The OEM supplier sets up an environment-related substance management system and starts the operation of the management system that complies with the “Manual for Establishing an Environmental Quality Assurance System.” If you have already implemented one, you will please review it.

  18. 2) Conducting internal audits The OEM supplier conducts an internal audit of its own management system and determines that the system complies with the “Manual for Establishing an Environmental Quality Assurance System.”

  19. Applying for OEM green partner • environmental quality certification When the in-house system has been properly organized and it is verified that the management system complies with the “Manual for Establishing an Environmental Quality Assurance System.” the OEM supplier makes an application for OEM green partner environmental quality certification to our division in charge of business contracts with you. Specific documents to be submitted at the time of application will be later informed.

  20. 4) Audit by Sony Sony audits the management system in OEM supplier for OEM green partner environmental quality certification. We will advise you in advance of the audit schedule. The audit procedure will be normally completed within one day.

  21. 5) Concluding the OEM green partner agreement The OEM supplier concludes the “OEM Green Partner Agreement” with us. The agreement is concluded for conducting OEM businesses based on mutual agreement. The agreement contains provisions such as observance of environment-related laws and regulations, procurement of designated raw materials, and cooperation system.

  22. 6) Issuing an OEM green partner environmental quality certificate An “OEM Green Partner Environmental Quality Certificate” is issued through these processes. This completes the certification procedure. The OEM supplier is now certified as an OEM green partner.

  23. Please refer to your copy of “Manual for Establishing an Environmental Quality Assurance System.”It explains along with a manual.

  29. 1. Purpose of the standard The purpose of the standard is to clearly indicate the subjects below, regarding the 'The Controlled Substances’ contained in the parts, devices, etc. which are used for Sony products. - The materials of which use is to be banned - The materials of which use is to be discontinued - The materials of which use is to be reduced By properly controlling the use of the above materials, we observe the legislation of each country, protect the earth environment, and reduce the undesirable impact on ecosystems An object: Combination of the material with its use

  30. 2. Application Application to products ・ The standard applies to all the products which are sold with the trademark of Sony, disregarding who has designed or manufactured the products. ・ The standard applies also to the products designed and/or manufactured by a company of Sony Group, under the commission of the third party. Application to parts and materials ・ The standard applies to the parts, materials, and/or other goods which are purchased by a company of Sony Group, or by a company commissioned by a company of Sony Group to design and manufacture the parts, materials, and/or other goods.

  31. 3. Definition of terms Environment-related Substances to be Controlled ('The Controlled Substances’) The materials contained in parts, devices, etc, and defined by Sony as harmful to the earth environment and human bodies Management standards To properly manage the materials according to its use, the definition is given as follows: Level 1: The use (delivery) is immediately prohibited. Level 2: The use (delivery ) will be prohibited at a known time in the future. Level 3: The use (delivery) will not be prohibited or the use (delivery will be actively reduced though its limit quantity (concentration) will not be fixed for the time being.

  32. 3. Definition of terms (Continued) Contained something is added, filled, mixed, and/or stuck to parts, devices, and/or their materials, Disregarding whether or not it is made on purpose. Impurity A material contained in a natural material but cannot be removed in the formation process to be an industrial material, or a material which is generated in the synthetical process but cannot be removed The time to ban on receiving the parts and materials The date when the delivery of parts and/or materials to Sony is prohibited

  33. 4. 'The Controlled Substances' and their management Cadmium and cadmium-based chemical compound Lead and lead-based chemical compound Mercury and mercury-based chemical compound Hexavalent chromium-based chemical compound Heavy metals Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) Polychlorinated naphthalene (PCN) Chlorinated paraffin (CPs) Mirex Other organic chlorine-based chemical compound (flame-retardant agent or plasticizer) Organic chlorine-based chemical compound Polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) Tetrabromobisphenol-A-bis (TBBA-A-bis) Other organic bromine-based chemical compound (flame-retardant agent) Organic bromine-based chemical compound Organic tin-based compound (Tributyl tin-based compound or triphenyl tin-based compound) Asbestos Azo-based compound Formaldehyde Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and PVC mixture

  34. 4. 'The Controlled Substances' and their management (Continued) Cadmium and cadmium-based chemical compound ・For packaging materials, plastic parts (including rubber parts), paint, ink, etc.: The use (delivery) is immediately prohibited. The permissible concentration is set less than 5 ppm when measured based on the measurement standard (ICP-AES, etc.). ・For nickel-cadmium batteries to be purchased as a new par: The use (delivery) will be prohibited on April 1st, 2003 and after. ・For electric contacts, fuse elements of fuses, glass frit, etc.: The use (delivery) will be prohibited on January 1st, 2005 and after. ・Do not care for the cadmium impurities in metallic materials.

  35. 4. 'The Controlled Substances' and their management (Continued) The permissible concentration of cadmium Never add cadmium and/or cadmium-based compound to plastic parts (including rubber parts). Taking into consideration the detection limit of the measurement equipment, general errors, and mixture of impurities existing in nature, the permissible concentration is set less than 5 ppm Pre-treatment method: Wet method or ashing method when existing with sulphuric acid Oxygen pressure method in a sealed container Measurement method: ICP-AES/OES, AAS, or ICP-MS We ask parts/materials suppliers to supply measurement data.
