  1. Convergence Ajay Phatak Jopasana Software & Systems

  2. Information and Communication • All human sensory organs communicate with the brain and provide information or inputs • Speech and body language are most common ways of communicating to the external world • Older ways of communication technologies had limitations to deliver all that was needed for perception • New communication technologies allows delivery of many of sensory information to be delivered digitally

  3. What is convergence ? • Ability to deliver voice, data, sound & images though universal network. • In common man’s language • Integration of functionalities of PC, Phone and TV • Analogy • Ability to pump “solids, liquids and gases” through the same pipe efficiently

  4. Converged networks • Based on internet as pervasive communication network • Hence typically IP networks • Physical layers could be copper, fibre or even air (wireless) or a combination all different modes

  5. Protocols in the converged world • ITU-T H.323 • Originally designed for ISDN based video conferencing • Integrated application and delivery • SIP – Session initiation protocol • Designed for delivery • Clear segregation of delivery and applications

  6. Some underlying protocols • DSL • B-ISDN • ATM / Frame relay • SDH/Sonet

  7. Some important challenges • The last mile problem • Broad band wireless • DSL on copper • Cable (as used in cable TVs) • Bandwidth Utilization • Applications to be developed for available bandwidth (Low or high) • Bandwidth availability is location and market sensitive

  8. Converged services • VoIP communication - • Video over IP – Videophones • Presence based applications • UMS – Unified messaging systems • Delivery of messages based on available device…..

  9. Deploying converged networks • Issues • Economics • Legal framework • Bandwidth • Examples • VoIP service for Corporates • VoIP service for individuals

  10. Convergence in wider context • All “Real world” applications are interdisciplinary • There is a strong need to understand variety of domains and technologies • Lateral thinking for understanding multidisciplinary challenges • All technology becomes software+data • Software architecture IS communication architecture

  11. Application areas for ICT professionals • Industry sectors • Process • Process Control • Process Information Systems • Process Optimization • Business Optimization • Power • Monitoring • Demand Management • Distribution • Optimization • Energy audit • Billing

  12. More application areas • Education • Engineering • Shop floor • CAD • CAM • GIS • Manufacturing • Operations monitoring • Industrial engineering • Management • Planning & Scheduling • Optimization • Maintennace & diagnostics

  13. More application areas • Insurance • Finance • Banking

  14. More application areas • Business • BPA – Business process automation • ERP – Enterprise Resource Planning • EIS – Enterprise Information Systems • Decision support systems
