  3. Areas of Maths Number and Calculations Shape and Space Measure Data Handling Using and Applying including Investigations Even though there are separate areas they are all interlinked!

  4. 4 Basic Steps Concrete Semi concrete Semi abstract Abstract It’s all about children being able to use creativity to solve problems or challenges!

  5. Number – Stage 1 • Counting to 10 forwards and backwards (from any number) • Recognising numbers • Ordering numbers • Writing numbers • Then moving up to 20 (only when they are secure up to 10) • Recognising coins (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p,20, 50p) Remember the 4 steps!

  6. Number – Stage 2 • Working with numbers: • Adding and taking away (Using objects, then pictures, then symbols and numbers, and then numbers on their own) Includes number bonds to 10 and then 20 • Doubling • Halving – objects and then numbers • Adding coins together (or finding a given amount) • Other skills: odds and evens, recording work, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, place value

  7. Number – Stage 3 • Using numbers in other ways: • Using halves and quarters • Grouping objects in 2s, 5s and 10s to help count • Recall multiplication of 2, 3, 5, 10 • Add and subtract 2 digit numbers in their heads • Money – working with decimals e.g. £3.06 is the same as 306p

  8. Shape – Stage 1 • Finding 2D shapes (different orientation!) • Naming 2D shapes • Beginning to find 3D shapes Remember the 4 steps!

  9. Shape – Stage 2 • Talking about properties of 2D shapes • Naming 3D shapes • Talking about properties of 3D shapes

  10. Shape – Stage 3 • Naming 2D and 3D shapes • Talk about the properties confidently • Naming 3D shapes from a net

  11. Measuring – Stage 1 • Non standard – things like hands, paper clips, pegs, cups • Counting how many of each • Beginning to put 2 or 3 objects into an order • Time – days of the week

  12. Measuring – Stage 2 • Can put 3 objects into an order (non standard) • Starting to use standard units: kg, m and l • Starts to see things that are more or less than each of these – only using these words! • Starting to put this information into writing • Time – o’clock and half past

  13. Measuring – Stage 3 • Uses standard units: kg, l and m • Knows which tool to use • Uses cm • Understanding 1000g is 1kg and 1000ml is 1l • Half of 1000g is 500g • Time – reads 12 hr clock; adding time together
