  1. Essay Guidelines This power point is to be used to revise and review your writing assignments to meet the requirement for this course.

  2. Paragraph 1: The Introductory Paragraph Should include three components:1) The Hook2) Summary of Article or Research3) Thesis Statement

  3. Component 1: Hook / Attention Grabber (Usually one to two sentences – click link to see examples) You can use the following strategies: • Ask a question • Use a catchy phrase or quote • A fact or statistic • Use a lead in sentence to entice the reader

  4. Component 2: Include a Summary of the Article Summarize the article(s) you have chosen for your essay. Cite the source This allows the reader to have background information about the topic. Sample Summary (click on link to see sample) Include author tags throughout summary – see handout

Component 3: Thesis Statement Topic + point 1 + point2 + point 3 = thesis Individual freedomTopic: Telecommuting Responsibility Time Management Thesis Statement Example: Telecommuting will have major effects in the worlds of work and family life. However, its biggest effect will be in the area of individual freedom,responsibility, and time management.
