What are “I Can…” objectives?. These are Essential Understandings that are written in a declarative form, in student-appropriate language. They are designed to break big concepts or processes into smaller component steps.

What are “I Can…” objectives? • These are Essential Understandings that are written in a declarative form, in student-appropriate language. • They are designed to break big concepts or processes into smaller component steps. • Having them allows students to identify where they ‘got stuck’ in the process. Although “I Cans…” seem to be the easiest type of EU to create, they may take more effort later in terms of keeping the students engaged with the Essential Understanding. Evelyn Rivera

COMMUNICATION Communicate in Languages Other Than English • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics • Standard 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. How to make an I Can Objective… Step #1: Write “I can…” in front of the standard: I can engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.  Step #2: Simplify into kid-friendly language I can give and get directions for how to make a Spanish dish. Evelyn Rivera

Your Big “I Can…”: I can engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. • Step #3: Now…formulate smaller “I can…” statements that will serve as the steps for knowing how to do your BIG “I can…” statement. • I can use the food and cooking vocabulary terms in context • I can deliver and follow oral commands necessary for food preparation • I can give and respond to directions • I can read a recipe and translate it from Spanish to English • I can compare and contrast the Spanish tortilla and the Mexican tortilla • I can form formal and informal commands Evelyn Rivera

  11. “I Can…” Objectives Activity Please do the following: • Use the “I Can” template. • Create one BIG “I can…” objective for a standard you’ll be teaching soon. • Brainstorm and create 5-6 smaller “I can…” statements. • Prepare to report out. Evelyn Rivera

Students will be able to: - use the food and cooking vocabulary terms in context - deliver and follow oral commands necessary for food preparation - give and respond to directions - read a recipe and translate it from Spanish to English - convert the measurements in to the metric system - compare and contrast the Spanish tortilla and the Mexican tortilla - create a cooking show using Movie Maker - form formal and informal commands - record their cooking show using a video recorder - compare and contrast a good example of a cooking show with one that is poorly done Evelyn Rivera
