  2. What is global warming? • Global warming refers to the phenomenon of the earth’s rising average temperature of the near-surface air and oceans. • During the past 100 years, the earth has become 0.74 ± 0.18 °C warmer. • There are two arguments about the cause of global warming: • Anthropogenic activities • Natural phenomenon

  3. "Global warming results mainly from anthropogenic activities." • The temperature has been increasing dramatically. • If there are only the natural forces involved, the temperature shouldn’t increase so rapidly like this.

  4. "Global warming results mainly from anthropogenic activities." • The earth's average temperature is proportional to atmospheric carbon dioxide positively. • The atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse effect gases have been soaring since 1750.

  5. "Global warming may not have been the result of anthropogenic activities." • The effect of the sun and cosmic rays • Earth's cloud cover changes with the intensity of cosmic rays • Not only does no climate model today consider the effect of cosmic particles

  6. "Global warming may not have been the result of anthropogenic activities." • The Polar ice is not thinning • The spectacular collapse of the ice shelves on the Antarctic Peninsula was likely to have followed natural current. • From the studying satellite data, the Antarctic ice sheet is growing at the rate of 5 millimeters per year.

  7. "Global warming may not have been the result of anthropogenic activities." • The limits of predictability • “No amount of improvement in the quality of the observation network or in the power of computers will improve the average useful forecast range by more than a few days.” • "We only understand 10% of the climate issue. That is not enough to wreck the world economy with Kyoto-like measures."

  8. Conclusion • There’s still no knowing whether global warming is caused by anthropogenic activities or not. • We should still fight against global warming even if we are not sure the cause right now. Because if we don’t devote ourselves to this campaign, it may be too late after we fully understand its mechanism. • If everyone concerns about environmental issues and the protection of eco-system, the world will be better!
