  3. QUESTION: A DPE was renewed in January and at the end of July he/she had conducted 120 certification rides. What is the term for this examiner?

  5. QUESTION: When conducting a certification with a citizen of the U.S., you issue a Temporary Airman Certificate. What type of Certificate will be issued?

  7. QUESTION? • As DPE a friend that operates an Airman Knowledge Testing Center calls you and asked if you could monitor an airman knowledge test on Friday. • Can you act as a monitor for a Testing Center?

He has documentation that in the past 24 months he has endorsed 12 students for a practical test with a 90% pass rate on the first attempt. • Can you renew his CFI and how?

  16. ANSWER: • Yes, you can renew the CFI. • The renewal is authorized on the basis of a practical test of the applicant ONLY.1-4 • The DPE with an FIE designationcannotrenew on the basis of activity, that is a FSDO functionONLY. 61.197(a)(2)

The ACR for the course is not available and they asked if you could fill in for the course. • Can you assist the school and fill in for the ACR? • Does this require that your letter of authorization be revised?

  18. ANSWER: • Yes, you can do the functions of the ACR for a CFI refresher course.1-4 • No, your letter of authorization doesn’t have to be revised in order to perform ACR duties or responsibilities.1-4

  19. QUESTION: • An applicant has flown you to his home base on the far side of your district, to conduct his instrument practical test. • During the course of the instrument exam, you concluded the exam at your home base. • Was the exam conducted properly?

QUESTION: • You have just completed a practical exam for a commercial certificate and the applicant has left with their temporary certificate. • You receive a call from your aircraft insurance company that needs copies of all your certificates. While making the copies you see that your CFI is expired. • What should you do?

  22. ANSWER: • Contact you Principal Operations Inspector at the FSDO and do not conduct any additional exams until your CFI has been reinstated. • Examinersmustmaintain a current instructor certificate for renewal and throughout the duration of the designation. 1-8 & 3-1

  31. QUESTION: • You are a DPE with designations for both airplane and rotorcraft. Your designation of authority expires on July 31st of this year. • When should you contact your POI for renewal?

  32. ANSWER: • On or before May 31st . • MUST apply for renewal at least 60 days prior to expiration. 3-1

  33. QUESTION: • As an examiner requesting renewal, you know that there are items that MUST be sent to the FSDO for renewal. • What items MUST accompany your request for renewal?

  34. ANSWER: • Letter that the examiner is requesting renewal. • Photocopy of the examiner’s current pilot, flight instructor, and medical certificate. • Activity log of practical tests given during the preceding 12 calender-months. • Must attach a completed FAA Form 8710-1.

  35. QUESTION: • In Feb of this year your medical expired. But you know that you don’t have any check rides to give until May, when the local college students graduate. • Can you wait until May to renew your medical?

  36. ANSWER: • NO! • At least a third-class medical certificate is required for renewal and MUST be maintained throughout the duration of the designation. 3-1

  37. QUESTION: • As a DPE you have an applicant come to you for an Instrument check ride. The weather for the day is a 1,000 foot ceiling with tops at 1,300 feet. The applicant came to you from the far side of your FSDO district the night before for the exam. • You decide for this exam that you will act as PIC. What currency MUST you meet to act as PIC for the flight?

ANSWER: • First you MUST have a current Flight Review IAW 61.56 • Second you MUST meet Recent Flight Experience: PIC General 61.57(a) • Third since the flight will be IFR you MUST meet Recent Flight Experience: PIC Instrument Proficiency Check 61.57(d) • Fourth if the aircraft would involve a type rating, you MUST meet 61.58 for PIC Proficiency Check.

  39. QUESTION? • As a new DPE appointed a year ago, you know that your authorized to conduct tests in a BE-55/58 as a CIRE. • You know that you MUST have conducted how many practical exams in the previous 12 calendar-months? • How many PIC competency renewal checks MUST you do?

  40. ANSWER: • “…should have conducted five multiengine rating tests in each make and model…” 3-2 • “…is only required to take one PIC competency renewal check within the preceding 12 calendar-months in each kind of aircraft…” 3-3

  41. QUESTION? • You give practical exams at a couple of different flight schools. Because they both have different types of aircraft, this requires you to have an LOA for both a BE-55/58 and a CE-310. • For renewal of your Certificate of Designation and LOA how many PIC competency checks MUST be taken each year? • In what aircraft do the checks have to be performed?

  42. ANSWER: • MUST accomplish one PIC competency renewal check within the preceding 12 calendar months, in either the BE-55/58 or the CE-310. • Within the preceding 24 calendar months, you MUST accomplish PIC competency renewal checks in both aircraft. 3-3

  43. QUESTION? • While conducting a practical test for an Instrument Rating in a high performance single engine airplane, your applicant misreads the chart and accidentally violates airspace. • What should your action be as a DPE?
