What’s Turner Syndrome? Turner syndrome is a disorder in females that causes a missing or defective X chromosome. This usually affects 1 out of every 2,500 live female births.
What are the symptoms? • Short stature • Different failure of ovaries to develop • Webbed neck or short neck • Abnormal fingernails and toenails • Low hairline at neck • Heart defect • Kidney or urinary tract defect • Hearing disorders • Frequent ear infections in childhood • Shortening of bones in the hands • Lower jaw smaller than normal • Drooping eyelids • Wandering eyes
How do you get Turner Syndrome? In a normal human being, you would receive one X chromosome from your mother and one from your father, but females who are affected, are missing one X chromosome. This is an example of nondisjunction during mitosis.
Where is it located? The 45th chromosome is affected by Turner’s Syndrome. This is where one X chromosome is missing.
What’s the history on it? What’s some famous people who have it? • The history of Turner syndrome began in 1938, when Henry Turner described 7 patients between the ages of 15 and 23, who were referred to him for dwarfism and lack of sexual development. He treated them with pituitary extracts, but they were ineffective. • The first published report of a female with a 45,X karyotype was in 1959 by Dr. Charles Ford and colleagues in Harwell, Oxfordshire and Guy’s Hospital in London. Famous People with Turners • Missy Marlowe, spokesperson for the Turner Syndrome Society, is a world champion gymnast. • Linda Hunt. an actress, she was in Kindergarten Cop.
How is it treated? How can you prevent your offsprings from it? There is no cure for Turner Syndrome, but there are hormones that can be given. Which the girl would be given growth hormones to increase her growth rate so she can become taller. She can also be given estrogen, which would replace the estrogen her ovaries would of made since most girls with the disease don’t have ovaries. Another hormone that could be given is progesterone, which will give the girl her “monthly menstrual cycle”. There are no preventions for this genetic disorder, as it has nothing to do with the parents’ background.
How does it feel to live with Turner Syndrome? This varies a lot. It depends on many factors. TS can lead to different health problems, normally these people are shorter and have problems with the heart, kidneys or thyroid. But it is not always like that. Some people just need to take daily or monthly pills and a little more hospital visits; some can actually lead near normal lives.
