Education for a Greener Future • Waste minimisation education project • Providing FREE activity days to primary and secondary schools across Lancashire • Also run training days & special events • 3 year project (began September 2003) • Extended to July 2007 • Funded by LCC, Blackpool and Wyre councils
WASTE AUDITS • Activity for year 5 upwards. Curriculum links to Science, Maths, PSHE & Citizenship • Sort and weigh one day’s worth of the school’s rubbish • Calculate how much waste is produced by the school in a year • Devise an action plan to reduce this amount by introducing recycling, re-using or reducing waste schemes
How to run a waste audit • Checklist: • Hall • 1 day’s worth of rubbish • 5 black plastic mats to be laid out in the hall • 5 ‘waste audit data sheets’ with clip boards & pencils • At least 30 pairs of rubber gloves • Lots of plastic carrier bags for weighing • Cloth bag of spring balances Health & Safety: • Wear old clothing (optional) and tie back long hair • Wear gloves at all times and don’t touch face • Don’t throw rubbish or crawl across the mats • Check rubbish for any dangerous/confidential items e.g. glass, tin cans. • (if found) Don’t touch glass and tell an adult immediately

Paper • Often a huge proportion of schools rubbish • District councils provide a service – usually but not always free • If not – Abitibi will pay for it
Compost • Free bins in Lancashire! • LCC provide up to three 220 litre bins plus caddies for classrooms
Other Materials • Batteries • Yellow pages • Textiles • Cardboard • Mobile phones • Printer cartridges
