  5. Provincial Course Requirements for Graduation A minimum of 20 credits… 3 English credits - Grade 10, 11, & 12 1 Language credit 2 Math credits 2 Science credits 2 Social Studies credits plus 10 Electives credits ____________________________________ 5 credits at grade 12 level (600 or 800)

Continued in 2014-2015 • Students completing 6 credits from the Career and Technical Education(CTE) Skilled Trades Course Selections area, with a minimum of 70 % in each course will receive a Colonel Gray CTE Skilled Trades & Applied Sciences Certificate. • Colonel Gray is students can register for Academy Diploma Program in Business and Innovation. • Gaelic521A, Housing621A, Office Management Technologies801A, Creative Multimedia801A, MUS801AX (Performance and Production), PED801AF (Phys. Ed. Fit 801) and Environmental Science621A are available with sufficient registration numbers.

  7. English 621L - English • Course Description • This course focuses on skills that explicitly link to post-secondary studies with an emphasis on literary analysis of a range of challenging texts. Therefore, attention is given to academic writing and research skills, critical interpretation, and formal speaking and listening skills. • This course is designed for students who enjoy the study of literature and wish to refine their craft as a writer, thinker, and communicator. • Acceptance into the course is dependant upon a teacher recommendation at the English 521A level.

Course Average RequirementsHigh School Marks are Important!!! • Most universities and colleges require a minimum 70% average in admissible courses. • The cut-off averages at respective schools are based on the applicant pool. The better your marks and average the better your chances. • In 2012, UPEI nursing students required an 85% or higher average to be considered for a seat in the program. • Admission is competitive. Higher averages provide more opportunities for acceptance to your program.

High School Graduation Requirements vs. Entrance Requirements to some programs… • 5 courses at the grade 12 level (600 or 800) • 4 language arts (one of which may be French), one English course from each level (400, 500, 600). • 2 mathematics courses • 2 science courses • 2 social studies courses • Additional electives related to career interests. • 5 Academic Grade 12 courses (621) • English 621A – minimum 70% • The best marks / course choices possible …be competitive when you apply for your program! University, College, Apprenticeship or Work after high school… • Degree offering institution: (science, arts, nursing, etc.) • Students take a broad range of courses creating a well rounded education. • Many students will go on and complete a second degree before looking for work. • Usually more debt after four or more years of study – but there is the potential for greater lifetime earnings. • Diploma offering institution: (culinary, welding, sports & leisure). • Students learn skills specific to their program. • 93% of Holland College grads are working in their career within one year of completing their program. • Some students then go on to university to complete a degree in their area of study. University, College, Apprenticeship or Work after high school… • Apprenticeship is a method of learning the skills and knowledge necessary to become a skilled worker and a certified journey person. • Most apprenticeship programs take two to four years to complete and combine approximately 80 % paid-on-the job training (under the supervision of a qualified tradesperson )with 20% technical/in-school learning. • Not everyone is prepared to continue their education after high school. • Some students enter the world of work, employed in a variety of jobs , while deciding on their career path. • Many people continue their education a number of years after their high school graduation. Requirements to compete for a seat in a program Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Repair and Overhaul Technology (10 months) • Preference will be given to applicants with • Gr. 11or 12math and • Gr. 11 or 12 physics is preferred. • Skills you have learned through high school courses(AUTO), co-op work experiences and paid work experiences • Reference letters Minimum Requirements for Entrance Grade 12* or equivalent with credits at or above the general level Resumé including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information about yourself relevant to the program

Requirements to compete for a seat in a program Culinary TradesHolland College • Courses related to the program: FDS421A, CUL801A, CUL801B – a Co-op work placement in the culinary area. • The best marks possible at the highest academic level you are capable of. • Solid reference letters from your culinary teacher. Minimum Requirements for Entrance Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level Ability to perform physically challenging tasks Resumé including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information about yourself relevant to the program.

  20. Holland College Degree Pathways • Articulation agreements and transfer credits give you the opportunity to begin your studies at one institution and finish at another. For example, you may decide to obtain a diploma from Holland College and then further your studies at a university. Or you may have begun your studies in university, and be interested in continuing your education at Holland College. • Example: Sport and Leisure Management -Mount St. Vincent University - Up to 2 years credit toward Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

  21. Opportunities after high school… • Canada will have nearly 1 million job openings from 2003-2015 in the skilled trades sector but continues to have a serious shortage of new, skilled tradespeople to fill in the retiring Baby Boomer gap. • In the next 20 years, 40% of new jobs in Canada will be in skilled trades and technologies. This is great news for those people looking for jobs that aren’t typical, that are constantly evolving in new industries and that require constant development. • Why consider a career in Trades?

Apprenticeship, Training, and Certification • Eligibility • In order to enter an apprenticeship program, a person must: • Be at least 16 years of age • Have a High School Completion Certificate or equivalent • Be working at a designated skilled career with a suitable employer • Government of PEI Apprenticeship information for high school students • AcceleratedSecondaryApprenticeshipProgram • ASAP Award $1000 - $500 for your tools and $500 for tuition.

  23. Canadian Forces • Canadian Forces/R.O.T.P.: Students wishing to enrol in the Royal Officer’s Training Program will require English, mathematics, physics and chemistry in their grade twelve program.
