  1. Digestive System By: Chloe Wilks, Kimberly Tankersley, and Elizabeth McClain

  2. Overall Function of the Digestive System

  3. Overall function of the Digestive System: • The digestive system’s primary function is to break down things we eat into smaller parts. This way, the body can use them to build and nourish cells and provides energy.

  4. Overall Function of the Digestive System: • The digestive system is basically a chain of organs that are used to provide the body with the energy to do all activities involved with a day. The mouth, stomach, and the small insistent all contain mucus that helps everyday people digest food and nutrients.

  5. Overall Function of the Digestive System: • When one eats, the food is composed into smaller objects, which are further broken down into the nutrients one needs for everyday life. Without the digestive system, everyday people, could not live an everyday life, doing the normal activities.

  6. Functions of organs in the Digestive System:

  7. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Anus-It keeps us continent when we are asleep. When we get have to go to the bathroom, we rely on the external sphincter to hold the stool until reaching a toilet, where it then relaxes to release

  8. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Tongue-breaks down food into smaller pieces increasing service area.

  9. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Colon-processes waste so that emptying bowels is easy

  10. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Pharynx-passes food to the esophagus

  11. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Esophagus-delivers food to your stomach

  12. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Salivary glands-secrete salivary amylase

  13. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Gall bladder-stores bile and releases it to help absorb and digest fats.

  14. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Small intestine-breaks down by using enzymes let go by the pancreas and bile from the liver

  15. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Pancreas-secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum.

  16. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Stomach-holds food while it is being mixed with enzymes it continues the process of breaking down food into a usable form.

  17. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Liver-process nutrients that are made by the small intestine

  18. Function of organs in the Digestive System: • Teeth-break large bits of food into smaller more digestible pieces.

  19. Links of Organs:

  20. Links of organs: • First the food goes into the mouth so the person can chew the food. While the food is being chewed, is also being broken down into a chemical composition that helps with the digestion process in the stomach.

  21. Links of organs: • After the person chews the food and swallows it, the food goes into the person’s esophagus. The esophagus, also known as the throat, is directly above the stomach. When the food is swallowed, it travels down the esophagus, and straight into ones stomach.

  22. Links of organs: • Right before the food reaches the stomach, it passes through the sphincter. The sphincter is what relaxes the food in order for the food to travel through the stomach easier.

  23. Links of organs: • The stomach breaks down the food into a more liquefied state, which is then followed by the dropping of the food into the smaller intestines. The food is then further digested by the bile, and certain enzymes, before it moves on to the large intestines. This is where the food is finally digested and it goes into the intestinal walls.

  24. The connections to the digestive system are Integumentary, Cardiovascular, Skeleton, Lymphatic, Muscular, Respiratory, Nervous, Urinary, Endocrine, and Reproduction system. Links to other body systems:

  25. Links to other body systems: • The Integumentary helps because the vitamin E goes into the skin and absorbs the calcium from the digestive system.

  26. Links to other body systems: • Cardiovascular systems blood stream takes all of the absorbed nutrients to all of the body cells.

  27. Links to other body systems: • . Skeletal system has to keep the calcium absorbed to maintain the bone matrix.

  28. Links to other body systems: • Lymphatic system helps absorb the fats.

  29. Links to other body systems: • Muscular system it helps mastication, swallowing, and moving and mixing of the digestive parts.

  30. Links to other body systems: • Nervous system helps the digestive systems activity.

  31. Links to other body systems: • Endocrine system helps the digestive systems activity also.

  32. Links to other body systems: • Respiratory system has the same anatomical structures as the digestive.

  33. Links to other body systems: • Urinary system helps activate the vitamin D.

  34. Links to other body systems: • Digestive system helps women get nutrition to reproduce in the reproductive system.

  35. Cause of death:

  36. c.o.d. • Bleeding in the digestive track could be the cause of death for our victim, because some of the symptoms are the same. For example, the victim was thought to have vomited, since there was vomit near her on the floor, and one of the symptoms for bleeding in the digestive track is nausea and vomiting. However, another symptom of bleeding in the digestive track is that there is bright red blood in the vomit, the paragraph did not state whether or not there was blood present in the vomit. The vomit could have also looked like coffee a ground if there was bleeding in the upper digestive track. But as previously stated, this was not mentioned in the paragraph. These are a few of the symptoms of bleeding in the digestive track.

  37. c.o.d. • There are multiple causes of bleeding in the digestive track. These include ulcers, and polyps or the beginning of cancer. Peptic ulcers can be caused by infections and long term non-inflammatory drug use. These are the main causes of peptic ulcers. The growth of polyps can lead to cancers. This type of cancer is one of the most common in the United States.

  38. c.o.d. • Bleeding in the digestive track can be diagnosed by first figuring out where the bleeding is occurred. This can be figured out by seeing whether there was bleeding in the stools, or vomit. This can then be treated by injecting chemicals into the site where the bleeding has occurred.

  39. c.o.d. • Bleeding in the digestive track is actually technically not a disease but a symptom. But in this case, it could be the cause of death. Most symptoms from the victim, can be linked to this disease. That is why it is believed to be our C.O.D.
