  6. What is Autonomous Learning? “an active, constructive process whereby learners set goals for their learning and then attempt to monitor, regulate, and control their cognition, motivation, and behavior, guided and constrained by their goals and the contextual features in the environment”(Wolters, Pintrich & Karabenick, 2003)

  7. What is Autonomous Learning?

  8. How much mathematics does an elementary teacher need to know? • Mathematics Knowledge • Autonomous Learning Skills • Metacognitive Reflection

  9. Reflective Thinking: Four Criteria (Rodgers 2002, p.845) • Reflection as a meaning making process • Reflection as a rigorous way of thinking • Reflection in Community • Reflection as a set of attitudes

  10. Criterion One: Reflection as a meaning making process “Reflection is a meaning making process that moves a learner from one experience to the next with deeper understanding of its relationships with and connections to other experiences and ideas. It is the thread that makes continuity of learning possible, and ensures the progress of the individual and ultimately, society. It is a means to essentially moral ends. “

  11. Criterion Two: Reflection as a rigorous way of thinking “Reflection as a systematic, rigorous, disciplined way of thinking, with its roots in scientific inquiry” (from the data of the experience to formulating a theory to testing that theory).

  12. Criterion Three: Reflection in Community “Reflection needs to happen in community, in interaction with others.” “The experience needs to be formulated in order to be communicated.” (Dewey)

  13. Criterion Four: Reflection as a set of attitudes • “Reflection requires attitudes that value the personal and intellectual growth of oneself and others.” • Whole-heartedness, directness, open-mindedness, readiness, …

  14. Metacognitive Reflection • Learning about our own learning • What Does it Mean to Foster Metacognitive Reflection?
