  1. HOPE Q3W2 chAPTER 10: alcohol Day 1: Overview of the affects on your body

  2. Let’s play a game: Truth or Myth • 1) Alcohol makes you smarter because it relaxes your body and focuses brain functioning. • MYTH • 2) Beer keeps you hydrated because the primary ingredient is water • MYTH • 3) It takes several drinks for alcohol to affect your body’s functioning • MYTH • 4) Your heart and liver are forced to work harder when alcohol is in your system • FACT • 5) Alcohol consumption can lead to vomitting. • FACT

  3. Game (con’t) • 6) You can cure a hangover with water, coffee, pills, and/or other remedies. • MYTH • 7) Alcohol allows you to act more mature. • MYTH • 8) You “loosen up,” and thus are a better conversationalist, when drinking alcohol. • MYTH • 9) Alcohol lowers a persons inhibitions. • FACT • 10) Drinking alcohol is healthy. • MYTH

  4. Game Facts • 1) Does alcohol make you more relaxed and “smarter?” • It can be relaxing, but this is because it slows down your nervous system. This negatively affects a person’s ability to make decisions, meaning you actually get DUMBER. • 2) Is beer hydrating? • No. It is dehydrating. Your liver uses the water in other parts of your body to try to filter the alcohol, which is toxic, out of your body. Extreme dehydration is what leads to a hangover.

  5. Facts (con’t) • 3) How many drinks for alcohol to affect the body? • 1-2. Reaction times are slowed, inhibitions lowered, and decision making negatively affected. • 4) Does the hear and liver work harder? • Yes, already talked about the liver. Alcohol widens your blood vessels, therefore blood doesn’t flow as easily, therefore the heart has to pump more blood. • 5) Why does alcohol lead to vomitting? • Because it is an irritant to your mouth, throat, and esophagus, and stomach.

  6. Facts (con’t) • 6) Can you cure a hangover? • No. You’re already extremely dehydrated. The only cure is water AND a lot of time. • 7) Do people act more mature when drinking? • No, it leads to a phenomenon I like to call “verbal diarrhea.” Lowering inhibitions is NOT a good thing. • 8) Does alcohol allow you to loosen up? • Sure. But see #7. • 10) Is alcohol healthy? • There is some scientific evidence that suggests their may be health benefits to LIGHT consumption for MIDDLE-AGED people. But consumption in youth and in large amounts is only negative.
