  4. The writing process • Pre-write • Collect ideas, use graphic organizers to help brainstorm • Draft • Develop ideas and write sentences to create a rough draft • Revise • Move things around, change things, make sure writing makes sense and is clear • Proofread/Edit • Check for spelling, and grammar • Publish • Share your writing with others (teacher, students, etc.)

  5. Organize your writing • We can use the candy wrapper model to help organize the structural components!

  6. Candy Wrapper Model-Structural Components HOOK/INTRO Start broadly to engage reader. Clearly state your POINT for writing here! BODY Brainstorm what stories, facts, quotes, etc. you want to include. Don’t forget support! CONCLUSION Restate point and leave audience with something memorable

  7. Candy Wrapper Model The hook/introduction should hook the reader and state your point-like the wrapper of the piece of candy. The body should have reasons and support for the reader to savor–like savoring the sweet taste of the candy. The conclusion should restate your point and leave the audience with something to remember-like the wrapper that’s left after eating the candy.

  8. FEED your writing! • You must FEED your writing by supporting your ideas with: • F – Facts • E – Evidence • E – Examples • D - Details

  9. Exit Slip • Pre Write the body (actual piece of candy) for one of the following topics : • Do video games lead to violence, • Should schools ban the sell of junk food, • Should schools require students to wear uniforms
