LANGUAGE SKILLS • New Vocabulary: Learning new words with proper pronunciation e.g. germination, soil, sunlight, roots, stems, branches, buds. • (a) Object Speaking: the teacher gives the idea of this activity by drawing a few parts of a plant on the board. E.g. leaf, seeds, roots, flower etc. • (b) Provide a real plant inclusive of the roots. • 3. Word puzzle: Arrange each group of jumbled alphabets to name a part of a plant. E.g. Cranbh, vsleea, roto, mets, edse, wefolr. • 4. Vocabulary game: Who am I? • E.g I grow into a plant • Ans: Seed • I give beauty to the plant • Ans: Flower • I make food for the plant. • Ans:Leaf • 5. Opposites: Thick stems, thin stems, Tree are big but plants are small. www.schoolofeducators.com

  4. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 1. Sequencing: The concept of sequencing in proper order will be reviewed as they learn the different stages of the growth of a plant. E.g. first stage is the seed, second – root, third – shoot, fourth – stem and so on. 2. Multiplication: Concept of multiplication can be applied while learning about roots and leaves. A plant has one main root. This root multiplies into two, which in turn multiplied again and produces four roots and so on. Hence we have the concept of multiplication 1 x 2=2, 2 x 2=4, 4 x 4=16 and so on. 3. Ascending order/small to big: This concept can be explained while learning the development of a seed at first into a baby plant and then into a big plant. Arrange the following words in an ascending order according to the stage of the growth of a plant. E.g stem, flower, seed, fruit, leaves, bud, root. 4. Shapes: Different shapes like circle, oval etc can be reinforced. E.g. (a) Cut a ladyfinger and observe how many sides it has? – It has five sides. A five sided figure is a pentagon. (b) What is the shape of an onion cut into rings-circle. (c) Name a vegetable that is oval shape-aubergine. www.schoolofeducators.com

  5. SCIENCE SKILL 1. Experimenting and observing: (a) Stage of germination: Six bean seeds will be planted in a pot. Each day only one bean will be sown. As the seeds grow they will be removed from the pot at different stages and pasted on a chart in the proper order for observation. (b) Bean seed can be grown in transparent cotton bags with wet cotton wool and observe and record the growth everyday. 2. Observation and logical thinking: Seeds will be sown in two different pots. One pot will be kept on the class window sill to enable it to receive sunlight and air. The other pot will be kept inside the classroom in a dark area. Both pots will be watered daily and observed. After a few days the children will write down their observation of both the pots. They will be asked to think and reason why the seed in the pot kept in the class didn’t grow. 3. Visual Skill: Objects will be brought and shown in class to reinforce the concept. E.g. The differences between herbs and shrubs, creepers and climbers can be understood will be actually seeing them and growing them. Children will be asked to collect leaves of different shapes and paste them in their books. Field Trip will be organized to a garden where children can see different trees, plants, flowers etc. www.schoolofeducators.com

  7. ARTISTIC SKILLS Draw and label the different parts of a plant. Collect picture of different plants and paste them in your books. Vegetable printing with vegetables and watercolors will be done. Leaf impression: Dipping a leaf in color and making its impression. Bark rubbing using wax crayon and seeing the effect of using the sides of the crayon. SOCIAL SKILLS Learning to the compassionate, responsible, loving, caring and infusing a sense of duty. Plants need care, love and looking after without which they would die. They need proper care just the way we are taken care of by our own parents. We should grow and look after trees in order to enrich our environment. www.schoolofeducators.com
