  2. Background You should have a basic understanding of the following aspects of 20th century life: • The fear of technological power and the use of satire to critique the military (Name a film that satirizes the military and its potential use of technology.) • The global dominance of the United States and interconnectedness of countries and cultures around the globe • The role of the artist in critiquing modern culture.

  3. Existentialism • We are revisiting this philosophy. Define “existentialism.” • Write a sentence for each of the following that identifies who they were and summarizes their connections to the existentialist perspective: • Soren Kierkegaard (SEE-ren KEER-kuh-gahrd) • Jean-Paul Sartre (SAWR-truh) • The Beats • Albert Camus (ka-MOO)

  4. Painting Since 1945 Art has developed in many directions during this period. Focus on the following movements and artists, noting the key ideas stated in your text about each one: Abstract Expressionism and Jackson Pollock’s Number 1 Robert Rauschenberg’s Monogram Andy Warhol’s Mick Jagger Philip Pearlstein’s Male and Female Nudes on Carpet Romare Bearden’s Empress of the Blues

  5. Sculpture Like painting, approaches to sculpture vary. Before class, study the photographs of each of the following works, and think about the impression that each makes on you: • Alexander Calder’s Big Red • George Segal’s Cinema • Henry Moore’s Reclining Figure: Wing • Maya Ying Lin’s The Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial • Magdalena Abakanowicz’sAgora • Duane Hanson’s Homeless Person
