  2. Organic Chemistry • The chemistry of carbon compounds • Few carbon-containing compounds, such as CO2 and CO, do not fall into the organic category • Muscles, tendons, skin, liver, brain, etc. all fall into the organic category • All produce is organic, not just those grown without pesticides

  3. Organic Nomenclature • Due to the vastness of organic chemistry, there was a need for naming and grouping organic chemicals • The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) uses prefixes that indicate the number of carbon atoms present in a molecular formula

  5. Alkanes • The simplest carbon compounds • Compounds of hydrogen and carbon, and have only single bonds • When naming alkanes, use the correct carbon prefix and then add –ane. • Ex: Name C3H8 propane • Work on practice problem #1!

  6. Structural Formulas for Alkanes • Remember that carbon has four valence electron, so it must have an atom attached to it on each side • Alkanes contain only single bonded carbon and hydrogen atoms • Ex: Draw the structural formula for butane • Work on practice problem #2!

  7. Isomeric Alkanes • Compounds having the same molecular formulas but different structural formulas • Ex: having ten pieces of Lego blocks used to built multiple things • Take the same number of atoms of each element and put them together in a different manner

  8. Isomeric Alkanes • Ex: Butane’s structural formula can be written in two different ways: • Work on practice problems # 3-4!
