  1. Managing Web Content A Case Study on FileMaker Dave Dumas Web Operations Manager www.filemaker.com

  2. FileMaker is a Marketing Site • Majority of single, marketing oriented pages • Using more and more AJAX and RSS • Mix of many CMS systems including FileMaker databases • Hannon Hill’s Cascade Server was chosen as our CMS for static pages • Good candidates for CMS (static) • Press Releases, Customer Stories, Updaters, RSS Feed, Podcasts, Blogs

  3. Top CMS lessons we’ve learned • Don’t think tools, think process • Don’t jam your existing site into a CMS • People aren’t kidding when the say separate content from display • Replace “Wouldn’t it be great”, with “Wouldn’t it be of great value”, Can vs Should

  4. Why we like AJAX and RSS • Client side processing • Emphasizes separating content from design, lots of opportunity to reuse content in multiple areas • People who pay my salary seem really exited about it!

  5. How we use AJAX and RSS • Actually we do…. AJAJ? • Asynchronous JavaScript + JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) • Hit lists of available content • To power redirect pages (for INTL redirects and WebTrends) • To automate our online store experience

  6. Example: RSS Feed • Needed a handy way for our editor to update rss feed • Need to track clickthroughs from feed for WebTrends • Live Demo

  7. Example: Updaters • Product updaters need the following collateral: • Detail Page • Lists of most recent updaters (Mac&Win) • List of all updaters • Live Demo

  8. Example: Blogs • Needed easy interface for VP! • Detail page with list of all available blogs • RSS feed • Redirect page so you always see the most current blog • Live Demo
