  1. HURRICANES vs. TORNADOES! Objective: Describe and analyze the formation of severe weather.

  2. Do Now! • What would you do if you were told that there was a chancethat the place where you live would be destroyed by a large storm (but you’ve been told this before). Would you evacuate and leave your life behind you, or take the risk and stay. EXPLAIN in at least 3-4 sentences 2. Think Back: What type of air pressure system is associated with high precipitation and stormy weather?

  3. Agenda • Objective • Announcements • Hurricane Katrina, 5 years later • Tornado & Hurricane Search • TORNADO & HURRICANE VIDEO CLIPS • Venn Diagram • Exit Ticket

  4. Objective • SWBAT describe and analyze the factors leading up to the development of severe cyclonic systems

  5. Reminders • Tutoring Monday/Friday/most Tuesdays for remediation, test re-takes • Unit 7 Test: Next Tuesday • Unit 8: Astronomy

  6. Quote of the Day “Trust is like a vase.. once it's broken, though you can fix it, the vase will never be same again.”

  7. HURRICANE KATRINA…5 years later • http://projects.usatoday.com/news/katrina/#/prologue/the-storm/the-storm

  8. Hurricane and Tornado Search • Textbook page. 573-577 • Quietly in your seat, take 15 minutes to complete your graphic organizer • As you go, consider similarities and differences between the 2 storms

  9. What is a Tornado?

  10. How Do Tornadoes Develop? Warm, humid air collides with cold, dry air The warm air rises up through the cold air creating an updraft If this updraft begins spinning, it can turn into a tornado

  11. Damage Caused by Tornadoes Extremely high winds can tear buildings apart, slip cars, and even suck the water out of a riverbed

  12. Tornado in Joplin, Missouri May 2011

  13. STORM CHASERS VIDEO • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65Su8wpmFu8 Why was this tornado in Joplin so destructive? What damage resulted from this cyclonic storm? What intensity rating did this tornado receive? • Any Future storm chasers in the crowd!?!

  14. CFU • What causes the most damage during a tornado? • What is the primary factor responsible for a tornado touching down?

  15. Hurricane

  16. Damage Caused by Hurricanes • Most from storm surge and flooding!!

  17. FAST FACT The word “hurricane” comes from the Taino Native American word, Hurucane, meaning “evil spirt of the wind.” The first time anyone flew into a hurricane happened in 1943 in the middle of WWII.

  18. Raging Planet: Hurricanes 10:35-17:48 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xa95p7_raging-planet-tornado-2009-part-1_tech?ralg=thefilter#from=playrelon Answer the questions and fill in the blanks on the worksheet provided while you watch

  19. CFU • What produces the most damage during a hurricane? • How is a hurricane formed? • What gives a hurricane its energy? • What happens when a hurricane hits land?

  20. Comparing & Contrasting Cyclonic Systems 5 minutes With your group, complete a VENN DIAGRAM on hurricanes vs. tornadoes Each group will be responsible for coming up and writing one thing for the class consensus Venn Diagram on the board at least2 points comparing the two systems at least 4 points on their differences. Consider: - speed - greatest damage - location of formation - time of formation/ predictability

  21. Venn Diagram: Hurricanes vs. Tornadoes

  22. Comparing and Contrasting Tornadoes and Hurricanes • Spinning systems of low pressure • High speed winds

  23. Hurricane Katrina Damage

  24. Exit Ticket __1. What type of air pressure system is associated with hurricanes and tornadoes? a. high pressure systems b. low pressure systems __2. What is the intensity ranking scale for hurricanes? a. Fujita Scale c. Saffir-Simpson Scale b. Cyclone Scale d. Wind speed Scale __3. Explain at least one key difference between tornadoes and hurricanes? __4. What produces the most damage during a hurricane? a. High wind speeds c. Heavy rainfall and storm surges b. Collapsing buildings d. The trembling ground __5. What produces the most damage during a tornado? a. High wind speeds c. Heavy rainfall and storm surges b. Collapsing buildings d. The trembling ground
